To clarify, I think a different world thereby means you're in a different dimension but there are entities & worlds that can exist in a void. This kind of runs parallel to a pop culture theory of human instrumentality, whereby the collective consciousness of all humans in the universe, are melded into a single entity, a hive mentality. In effect, the hat might be it's own world, acting as a sort of limbo for anyone who enters.
This is a good point! Could each door lead to an alternate reality? If one door leads to FTL, and one to SB, could there be characters in both worlds at the same time? Of course, this may create an alterior motive for the curse, because there would still be characters in FTL acting as though nothing happened. Maybe Regina and Gold are the only ones can travel through the dimensions....

If one door does indeed lead to say Oz or Narnia, I'm pretty sure that would confirm the alternative reality theory. Because, whether it be a dream ( like Oz was ) or truly another world, time passes at a different rate in those worlds. In fact, in Narnia you can be gone months & in the 'real world' - only have been gone around a few moments or days tops.
So I think it's a possibility that the character's could be in both worlds at the same time, since time is subjective & really it's only a construct that humanity has invented; which is the case whether the world is the 'real world' or not.
I think a huge ulterior motive for Rumple if this turns out to even be plausible would be to either find Baelfire after he became the Dark one. Or perhaps go a step further & fix his 'cowardly' actions in reference to the first Ogre Wars.
Either way, this is all just speculation for fun. But I for one would think it would make an interesting plot point if either Regina or Rumple could go back & change the thing that made them 'evil' - just to see how differently things might play out.

@Dorothy : Perhaps it leads to Bill Murray's house.

That's a good point! I'd just like to point out for any of you who read James Patterson: in his new series Witch and Wizard, there's an alternate plane Shadowlands, where time is completely subjective, just as crual_fortuna said. For example, Whit and Whitsey (the main characters) were in Shadowlands for what seemed like maybe an hour, but when they got back to the real world, months had passed. Maybe the worlds behind the doors work like this?

In fact, door #9 reminds me of the doors that lead into Minas Tirith.
Plus, if we ascribe to the idea of time flowing at different rates, either of those doors could instead lead to Avalon - where based on legend, Arthur is said to wait until the time of England's greatest need.
