Why does Gold want Emma to believe?

Mr Gold believes that his son is out there in our world somewhere, but he can't leave Storybrooke to go find him and be reunited with him. Once the curse is broken though, he'd be able to, so I think that's why he needs Emma to believe.

I think this totally makes sense...Once the curse is broken, Gold can go out of SB and look for his son
But now with the update the the curse breaks with Emma's death - would Mr. Gold like that????

I think he wanted Emma to believe because he needs the curse to be broken so he can leave Storybrooke to go find Bae. He is planning on taking a trip right? As to why he brought magic back, maybe he needs it to find Bae and to protect himself as well as Belle now...Those at least seem like the most logical reasons to me... Sspoiler][/spoiler]

He brought magic back to SB because he was jonesin for magic. It wasn't for "self defense." The guy is an addict to the stuff. He'll never give it up. And if he ever does, it'll be the end of his story and he'll be "redeemed" for choosing someone over magic.

I’ve started to think that Rumple brought back magic more because of an obsession/addiction than ‘protection’. At first, I did think it was just the next step in getting Baelfire back, or needed to protect Belle. I want to say either Kitsis or Horowitz has already claimed that Rumple did not bring magic back to protect Belle. As much as I want to think it’s all for Bae, starting to question if he’ll really give it up. Might have been an easy promise when he offered it to August, after being cold-turkey for 28 years, but I think having it back next season is going to strengthen his addiction (hence, creepily stating ‘magic is power’ to your newly reunited true love. )

I agree. I think Rumpel is addicted. And he sort of thrives on the dark magic. Hopefully magic that comes from true love will be different and he won't be able to use it in the same way.

^But that's why I think he didn't bring it for himself. He knows that light magic doesn't mix well with his traditional dark magic. He even said that to Baelfire in "The Return." He knows that light magic an dark magic don't mix. So, the fact that the magic he brought to Storybrooke was that of true love (Snow and Charming's true love to be exact) tells me that it's probably going to go to Emma. Like it or not, Emma is tied to Rumpel's plan. Breaking the curse isn't the only thing she's supposed to accomplish. If that were true, then her storyline would be over, but it isn't. The curse was about Rumpel finding Bae, and Emma is directly tied to that because she's the savior. Rumpel made her the savior for a reason.

So, I think Rumpel will continue to do villainous things, but he'll be indriectly allied with Emma. Of course, it won't be out of the goodness of his heart, but it'll be because he needs her for a future plan.

I think you may be right. We've already seen an example of Mr. Gold creating loopholes to protect Emma from Regina. The main example is the whole "if you kill Emma, then the curse will be broken" deal. So, Mr. Gold and Emma will probably have some sort of uncomfortable alliance with each other in season 2. Like you said, it won't be out of friendship or honor, but hey, you get what you can get.

I really think that Rumpel's plan was to have Emma come to town and break the memory curse and the keeping everyone stuck in Storybrooke curse. Then he wants to find Bae. And then he is going to kill Emma so that he can return to fairytale land.
