Holy Grail reference

Postby obisgirl » October 16, 2012, 11:21 pm

In the episode, Lancelot said:

In my kingdom, there is a legend of a cup that has the power to grant eternal life. And so, may the love between you always be strong, true, and eternal.

First of all, when I read that, I thought, that has to be "The Holy Grail"? Does that mean we'll get a 'Holy Grail' story at some point on the show?

I think Rumple might have the Holy Grail! Didn't he remove a golden goblet and replace it with Belle's chipped cup in Skin Deep?

Maybe his centuries of life aren't just a part of being the Dark One..

I guess that was the Holy Grail.

Nah, I think being the Dark One is what makes him immortal.

I think he has it, that golden cup he removed in Skin Deep could have been it. Don't think it was what granted him eternal life though, think he had that from being the Dark One. Hence why he valued it so little, a cup that grants eternal life, but he's already eternal.

I really hope that we don't see the Holy Grail ... though its forever joined to Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table stories thanks to T.H. White and Monty Python, it is also an icon of religion and faith. To bring an icon of faith into a show about fairy tales may cross a couple of boundaries.

I like the mention of it - the acknowledgment of it in a speech ... but aside from the issues mentioned about, I really don't think that there is any need for eternal life in FTL...

Maybe Rumple really does have the holy grail. After all, why wouldn't an immortal guy want to drink immortal juice? :ugeek:

yeah but Rumpel doesn't really need immortal juice. but it was a shiny goblet as I remember. and shiny stuff does tend to be attractive.

If "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" taught us anything about the Holy Grail, it's that it's NOT the fanciest goblet, so if that cup at Rumple's place was meant to be the Grail, they stuffed up with the props. ;)

I tend to agree. It's getting dangerously close to a line that's best to steer clear of crossing. If they went there, they'd have to tread carefully. They are telling us with this show that all these characters are real, so it's not like they'd exactly be turning the Holy Grail into a fictional object. But it's an object of great significance in a real religion in our world, and writing it as though it's part of a collection of fairytales and myths set in an alternate reality could potentially offend a whole lot of people. The vague mention of it was fine, as it was a nice little nod to Lancelot's legend, but getting specific about that story could end up as a hot mess.
