just thought I would start this but do not have to much to say
Did you notice the scars on her arms both in FTL and also in STORYBROOKE. Saw it in the diner when Red came back to work for her.

She’s a really difficult character. She is one of the few characters, who’s very similar in both FTL and SB. She may be even a little bit more strict in SB, but not much.March 12, 2012 at 11:52 am #138650nonnieParticipantHere strictness comes from LIFE… especially as a care taker… Older women know a lot of trouble and mess can be avoided by use of common sense…. The messes / trouble is usually things that GRANNY end up having to take care of and that is why they want the avoidance.
March 12, 2012 at 2:12 pm #138663SlurpeezParticipantI find Granny’s FTL name really clever. She is referred to as the Widow Lupus by the villagers. Lupus is Latin for wolf! Given that Granny was marked by a werewolf and transformed into one, as well as married to a werewolf, the name makes sense. It is interesting that her scars carried over from FTL to SB (just as Prince Charming’s chin scar carried over). What wasn’t as clear was how in FTL, Granny had overcome transforming into a werewolf but maintained her keen sense of smell. How did she manage to prevent transforming during wolf’s time? I was intrigued that Granny Lupus hired a wizard to make a magical red cape that prevents Red Riding Hood (whose referred to as Eliza in SB by Granny) from turning during the wolf’s time. I really want to see more of that back story in season 2.

March 12, 2012 at 3:09 pm #138668miaParticipantI thought Granny said Liza. The way the line went (can’t remember exactly), it seemed an allusion to Liza Minelli. But, as they don’t know much about the “real” world, maybe they wouldn’t know her?
Also, I heard Lucas and not Lupus, but I might be wrong. Definitely like the Lupus better!March 12, 2012 at 4:34 pm #138674SlurpeezParticipant@ mia: I heard Granny say “e-LIZA” with a soft “e” sound and an emphasis on the “Liza” part when she wants to teach Ruby bookkeeping in the diner. I could be wrong. Perhaps it’s just a reference to Liza Minnelli (who wore a lot of makeup). Both “Liza” and “Eliza” are shortened variants of the name “Elizabeth” from the Hebrew for “God is my oath.” Also, for some reason I thought of Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady (which is probably completely unrelated). She transformed from a common flower girl to a lady.
As for Granny, I have to alter my original opinion and say I think she is called Widow Lucas. Perhaps this is the writers’ nod to George Lucas, the director and producer of Star Wars. The creators of OUAT said Star Wars is one of their favorite fairy tales. However, I still prefer the name Lupas myself (perhaps because it reminds me of Harry Potter book 3 where Professor Lupas was a werewolf).
@ NONNIE: A thought I have regarding Granny’s scar is that since it carried over from FTL, and since it still hurts every full moon, perhaps the werewolf curse is still active in SB, which is why Ruby wears so much red.

March 12, 2012 at 7:03 pm #138705miaParticipantAh, George Lucas! That could be it. I was trying to find some connection to anything, but couldn’t find anything.
I also had to think of Remus Lupin from HP when you wrote about lupus!I think we can be pretty sure the werewolf thing is somehow active in SB. When Emma and Ruby are looking for David, Ruby says “I hear hammer.” That clearly indicates that she actually hears David’s heart!

Maybe Granny figured out a way to control the wolf and will herself not to transform. She obviously had full knowledge of the transformation when it happened, unlike Red who had no idea she was the wolf.
I hate to say it, but it could have been an ‘age thing.’ Like Granny said the only thing she still had of the wolf was the tracking sense and everything else just faded away with time. As Granny aged, the wolf aged too.
