Emma’s conversation with August made me think twice. At face value, it did seem like she still was stubbornly skeptical. Yet, underneath, she seemed afraid that what August was saying to her could actually be true. She responded not as someone who is objectively skeptical and dismissive, but as someone who’d been abandoned and suffered having to be alone her entire life. To then be pushed into the position of having to save everyone would be overwhelming to everyone, let alone to someone like Emma who has always been alone and had to look out jut for herself. As Emma said, she could only just fathom taking care of Henry, let alone everyone else in Storybrooke. That is why she reacted as she did by trying to escape town with Henry in tow. I transcribed part of their conversation. If you re-watch it, tone that Emma has in her voice at the end of their conversation doesn’t sound like disbelief but like panic and fear. I suspect that her refusal to believe isn’t so much rational as it is emotional. She tries to come across like she is the logical one, but she quickly resorts to emotional reasons why not to believe.
August: You’re in denial. It’s more powerful than I thought. It’s preventing you from seeing truth.
Emma: Okay, one of us is losing it here, and it isn’t me.
August: You don’t want to believe. After everything you’ve seen, why can’t you just do it?
Emma: Why is it so important to you that I do?
August: Because I, the town, everyone needs you!
Emma: I don’t want them to need me!
August: Well, that’s too bad, because we all do!
Emma: You’re saying that I’m responsible for everyone’s happiness? That’s crap! I didn’t ask for that! I don’t want it!
August: Right now! A little while ago, you didn’t want Henry either, but then he came to you. And now, you are fighting like hell for him.
Emma: For him! Because that is all I can handle right now, and I’m not even doing a good job at that.
Now you’re telling me I have to save everyone! That is ridiculous! I don’t want any of it!
August: Well, that is too bad, Emma, because that doesn’t change the truth. You’re our only hope.

I agree. She was freaking out at the responsibility. There’s no need to panic over something that isn’t real. So yes I think she definitely thinks it’s possible, she just doesn’t want it to be true.

I’d actually go further. I’ve re-watched the episode and the way Emma’s talking and the lines said (like in the transcript) do sound like she actually believes. The only thing preventing her to acknowledge that, is her denial to be the saviour and shoulder the responsibilities that come with it.

I think Emma has real abandonment issues and has pretty much fended for herself for her whole life and has trouble trusting people and has real trouble with them trusting her. She doesn’t think she can do it. And i agree that she wouldn’t be so scared if she didn’t think it could be true. She is right there on the edge. Like it is crazy, but she is so scared, she can’t deal with it, but there have been all of these things that are making her wonder a bit.
I don’t think that it helps that the one person who was suppose help her from the beginning and aboandoned her is telling her what she has to do. I was reminded of a song by Jeremy Camp that was based off of the Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe movie and I think the Lyrics apply very much to Emma.

And she was certainly getting rather worked up over it. Then decided to run away from it.
So either she’s starting to believe or she’s just fed up with dealing with this Fairytale crap, but I’d like to think she’s starting to wonder if there’s a possibility it’s true. I liked the twist that she couldn’t see August’s leg because of her denial.
Jennifer was fabulous in that scene. Did anyone else think her hair looked like a lion’s mane, the way they had it hanging down the front of her shoulders? Seemed intentional to me, like they made her hair really obvious, this blonde mane in the middle of the dark forest. Maybe a shoutout to the Cowardly Lion from Oz?
100% with this, After August shows Emma his leg and that didn’t work to convince her and he goes off on this tirade it seemed more to me in that conversation that she does believe what she’s being told. To me that’s not the reaction I would expect to hear from someone who just doesn’t believe, it sounds more like someone who DOES believe and doesn’t want to face it. Maybe it’s not a matter of believing in magic or curses but a matter of Emma believing in herself. Hence the line in the promo by Henry “you might not believe in curses but I believe in you.” Her son’s belief in her I think is gonna get Emma to do what she needs to do

Exactly! August thought all along HE was the key to helping Emma believe, and I agree that was the responsibility he chose to shoulder; he promised his father, Gepetto, he would. But it’s not as simple. Henry is the only one who is truly capable to breaking through Emma’s defenses. I think in this episode August laid down the groundwork…now Emma has her doubts, she’s not entirely sure he’s lying, otherwise she wouldn’t be so panicky. The next logical step would be for Henry to find some way to make her believe. Henry is the one who’ll make the savior believe and understand what she needs to do.
