We all know Rumple plans out his deals in order to get something specific, or to accomplish a specific goal. Or he has people owing him a favor that he can twist to get what he wants in the future. Question on my mind then is: what led Rumple to choose Belle as his price of saving Maurice’s little town from the ogreswar?
I have the feeling that there is some sort of backstory to be told on how Rumple decided Belle would be his price. My thought is that he accidentally ran into her or noticed her while in town or some other place, and wanted her to be with him in his castle (although maybe he didn’t realize he was “attracted” to her at the time). What triggered this thought is something Rumple says when he asks for her as the price is: “What I want…is her.”(and ofcourse the idea always plans his prices in advance)
What do you guys think?

The most precious thing to Maurice was Belle. Even Belle asked him why he wanted her and he replied “The place was filthy”, but she guessed that he was lonely and I don’t think he denied it. I love it when he talks about having a caretaker for his “rather large estate” because it just sounds like one massive euphemism.

The interesting piece to me is that Belle seemed just as eager to go as Rumple seemed to take her! So I have wondered if Rumple saw her and noticed that she was stiffled by her father and Gaston and somehow wanted to “rescue” her from the situation.
But Rumple was such a “loner” and not what you would call a “people person” so it is odd to me that he would have choosen to actually take her to his “rather large estate” (and okay you can’t tell me there was ANYONE who WASN’T thinking THAT when he said it!! 😉 ).
I have thought about this a lot since Skin Deep and even though I am a total Rumbelle shipper, even when I try to look at it in an unbiased way the only explaination I come back to is that they were truely perfect for each other. I mean Belle had this supposedly handsome catch of the town whom she was supposed to marry but the last thing she cared about was what was on the outside of a person. I am only familar with the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast but Belle was an outcast in her Village because she was a woman who liked to read and could think for herself – she didn’t care what anyone’s opinion was of her. She wanted someone who would appreciate her for who she was. She would have been very well spoken and well versed because of all the reading she did. After all of Rumple’s years I would imagine he would have also been very well read. Maybe he had been searching for someone to bring to the castle who would be able to talk to him and he noticed Belle – it could have been purely coincidence that she was a women. And then when she got to the castle we know what happened . . .

When he was sat at the table telling her what her duties were, she was very accepting of it, something you wouldn’t expect someone of high birth like Belle to be like. He threw in the quip just to probably throw her a curve ball, see how she’d react and when he told her it was a joke she seemed to relax a little. Belle also treats Rumpel like another human being, nobody else seems to.

However, I think he was surprised to find himself falling in love with her. Especially after he vowed to never love anyone ever again. Lucky for him, he did. 😀

As I recall I had him choosing Belle because he had a grudge with her family going back centuries (remember when we thought the DO was thousands of years old and Rumple himself many hundred? Ah good times.) from when her ancestor had Rumple’s dagger and made Rumple do terrible things. So basically he wanted to get revenge by insuring that ancestor’s line would die out and locking Belle away in his rather large estate for life would accomplish that nicely. I don’t think that Rumple even knew he was lonely until Belle pointed it out. She saw right through him in Skin Deep.
Maybe their story didn’t play out exactly as I would’ve wished, but I’ll always love Rumbelle. Heck I even painted a quote from their wedding on my bedroom door!
