I’m a big Broadway fan, and OuaT reminds me of a musical. Anyone familiar with Into the Woods? It’s a Sondheim musical that combines several well known fairytales- Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. There’s also a baker and his wife who’ve been cursed to not be able to bare any children unless they can bring these ingredients to the witch who cast the spell: cow as white as milk, cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, slipper as pure as gold.
In this version of Cinderella’s story, there are 3 balls. On the last night, Prince Charming is tired of chasing after Cinderella and leaves pitch on the stairs that she gets stuck in. Then she leaves her shoe there on purpose! Also, Cinderella’s prince and Rapunzel’s prince are brothers and they each sing about their woman troubles! “Always ten steps behind/ Always ten feet below/ And she’s just out of reach!” One of my favorite lines is when Prince Charming says, “I was raised to be charming, not sincere!”
Kinda amusing that OuaT calls Snow’s prince Prince Charming….Prince Charming is actually Cinderella’s prince! Snow White’s prince in the Disney movie does not have a name!

Looked this up in Wikipedia and it’s true. Prince Charming is typically the generic, catchall name for most princes in fairy tales. And I got a kick out reading how the stock character of ‘Prince Charming’ is described:
“These characters are often handsome and romantic, a foil to the heroine, and are seldom deeply characterized, or even distinguishable from other such men who marry the heroine.
In many variants, they can be viewed as rewards for the heroine rather than characters.” 😆
And yes, I’ve seen Into the Woods. I found it both hilarious and endearing.
As far as character names, Disney named their EQ Grimhilde, though it’s never mentioned and the Huntsman’s name is Humbert which is Graham’s last name as seen in the belongings Emma was given.
Oh, and while Disney uses Maleficent as the name of the evil fairy in Sleeping Beauty, the ballet uses Carabosse.

10 years ago the musical ‘Doornroosje’ (Sleeping Beauty) played in Belgium and The Netherlands, also the musicals ‘Sneeuwwitje’ (Snow White), ‘Pinokkio’ (Pinocchio), Assepoester (Cinderella), Belle en het Beest (Beauty and the Beast) and Into the woods.
The fact that I love the first for musicals above is that they’re not related to Disney (not that I don’t love the movies..)
Two years ago I went to the Disney musical sing-a-long.
There’s a book I once read called Just Ella which takes place after the known story of Cinderella and describes how miserable Cinderella is in the castle and how vapid the prince actually is!
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical about the Princess and the Pea. Very cute, There was a Disney version years ago that has a young Zooey Deschanel and Matt Morrison (Will on Glee) as the young couple.

If you haven’t all ready heard of them you should look up Stiles and Drewe. They are a British team who have written and composed some brilliant musicals and also re-worked Disney’s Mary Poppins for the stage, which is brilliant.
Stiles and Drewe wrote Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical, which I directed for my AmDram society last year. Beautiful show. They have also done, Just So (based on Just So Stories), SOHO Cinders and a favourite of mine that you might all be interested in which, I hope with a friend to direct for one of my amdram societies at some point… Peter Pan. The music they have done for this show is beautiful.

One of my earliest and fondest memories of childhood is watching the TV production of Once Upon a Mattress which starred Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred. Burnett originated the role on Broadway, then did the TV version, then played the part of Queen Aggravain in the 2005 Disney version. Wouldn’t it be great if Once Upon A Time did an episode based upon this story and could get Carol Burnett to make a cameo appearance! Who knows, maybe she’s a fan of the show.
There was also a movie version of Into the Woods made in 1997.
