Rumple promised Belle that he would protect her. We learned from The Return that Rumple takes protecting the ones he loves in an overbearing manner. Do you think Rumple will be overly protective of Belle like he was with Bae? Plus, Rumple still aches for power (because without it he believes he is a coward) How long do you think his relationship with Belle will last if he lets power consume him?

You could even tell the difference between the reunion scene and the forest scene. In his shop, he showed only sheer love towards her, overjoyed with seeing she’s alive. But in the forest, even though he still cares deeply about protecting her, he still has an agenda to take care of and was rushing to bring magic back.

I think he was in a hurry to bring back magic because he knew the curse was broken–Belle remembering is the clear sign of it. Primarily, I think he wanted to bring back magic to find Baelfire. When Belle comes and tells him that Regina locked her up, I think his wanting to bring magic back increased. Not only would he find Baelfire, but he’d need mgic to protect himself (he has a ton of enemies) and Belle. Plus, I have a feeling he is going to take his vengeance on Regina. You can see a flicker of anger on his face when he says, “She did this to you.”
As for how he will protect Belle, it does depend. I really hope he remembers his confrontation with August when he thought the latter was his son, and how he had chosen magic over him. I hope he remembers how his magic had driven Baelfire into seeking aid from the Blue Fairy.

Personally, the scene in the forest only demonstrated that Mr. Gold was in a hurry to bring the magic to Storybrooke. He knew the curse was breaking (hince Belle remembering), so he felt the need to rush. So, I don’t think it had anything to do with his love for Belle. He was just in a hurry. 😉

And um yeah, being under his protection will be…interesting. He protects people a dictator protects his power. FIERCE. But I’m not too worried. No one on this show has been able to run away from their true love. NO ONE. So, Belle’s love will eventually bring him back down to Earth. But he needs a learn a lesson or two first.
