There has been a lot of speculation about who Bae’s mother might be, but what about his father? If the knight from episode “Desperate Souls” was telling the truth, Rumpel is not the biological Dad. This is purely for speculation because we still need a ton more pieces to the puzzle for everything to come together!

I mean, if it was an affair then it would have to be the Knight or someone close to him, after all, how else would he know. Personally i don’t like the idea of that taunt having any credence especially after all Rumple did to get back to Bae.
May 29, 2012 at 11:32 pm #148031the_saviorParticipantHaha, I’m the one that posted this in the Desperate Souls tag.
At this point of time, I’m not quite sure if Rumpel is Bae’s biological father, I mean, the original story of Rumpelstilskin has him asking for people’s first borns. Not that that makes Rumpel any less of a father because I think we can all agree that he truly loves Bae.
I actual think that Bae might be a bastard child of an affair that Rumpel’s wife had with another man while he was away. Rumpel never really denies the fact that Bae is a bastard’s child, and I really don’t see Rumpel having any type of romantic relationship before marriage, so I think that excludes him. I also think that Rumpel had an arranged marriage to his wife and never truly loved her, making Belle his true love.
May 30, 2012 at 12:31 am #148033hjbauParticipantWhy didn’t Rumpel say that is not true then? He did not refute the claim that Bae was not his son and it was said in front of Bae. Why? I would. i would immediately say that is not true if it wasn’t true. That episode is just so weird.

In the middle ages, the lord of the manor had the right to be the first with a serfs bride ( virgins) or the pick of any woman in the village or farms. It was the custom and many babies were born as bastards from that practice.
The Dukes/ Lords of the manor and rulers have right over life and death over the peasants. They often would kick a farmer off the fields turning them out whenever they wanted. It was much akin to slavery. There were more haneous practices. I think the story will evolve that Rumple’s wife was taken by the lord of the manor as was the custom and that is why Bae is considered a bastard… he probably born 9 months or less after their marriage. Maybe Rumples wife was angry the Rumple could not / would not protect her and that is why she bailed.

Of course, it could all come out in later episodes that Bae is in fact a bastard. But for the most part, I think it was just mean-spirited taunting on the part of the Duke and the Dark One.

No matter if Rumpel knows Bae is biologically his or not, he loves him whole – heartedly. Rumpel is the one who raised him, cared for him, I believe Rumpel would do anything to get him back even if Bae is not his son by blood. Either way they share a close bond.
I also think that Rumpel had an arranged marriage to his wife and never truly loved her, making Belle his true love.
That’s what I was thinking too! I’m sure whoever he married was not his true love. Especially if the knights information is accurate and she abandoned Rumpel and her son because she could only see Rumpel as a coward after running from the ogre wars. I wonder if the real reason she left him was to hook up officially with Bae’s father.
I think it was just mean-spirited taunting on the part of the Duke and the Dark One.
That could be true, it’s just that Rumpel looked so guilty and defeated when he said that. It could be because he was appalled at the accusation, or out of pure painful memories.

THANK YOU!!! I was just about to post something like this. It was the norm for wealthy land owners to take the wives and daughters of the farmers. I honestly believe this is what happened to his wife. The way the duke was taunting Rumpel made me think he knew exactly what happened to her. Mainly because he was probably involved.
And on top of that, it fit into the narrative of Rumpel’s sad life. His pre-Dark One days were pitiful and unbelievably sad. 🙁

Wow! Great theory! I remember something similar happening in the movie “Braveheart.” The newlywed bride was taken by one of the wealthier men and raped on her wedding night. I wouldn’t be surprised if this happened to Rumpel’s wife. And like A_Desperate_Soul already stated, it would make sense for Rumpel’s story. His entire life has been filled with tragedy. This would just be one more unfortunate event to add to his list.
