May of last year, I traveled abroad with two of my girlfriends (we went to Munich, Germany and Florence & Venice, Italy). One of the spots we really wanted to see in Germany was the Neuschwanstein Castle (which became the model for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty’s castle).
Neuschwanstein Castle is part of the Romantic Road, outside of Munich in the Bavarian country side. It’s called the Romantic Road, because well, the scenery is beautiful and it is romantic. The castle was built under King Ludwig II, who later made the country of Bevaria financially broke since he built so much.
But he had a good eye for landscape and real estate, so props to Ludwig. 😀
I only have exterior shots since photography is not allowed inside the castle. But I do remember there was a cave room and everywhere you saw something that looked like a swan (not a real one), it was actually a humidifier. 😆 Yes, they had humidifiers back then and there was gold everywhere. I think our tour guide said the reason they had the humidifier was to keep the air inside the castle from going stale.
I bring it up because even though the Sleeping Beauty story in Once fairy-tale land, apparently, took place decades before the events of the pilot, I still hope we get see Sleeping Beauty’s story on Once Upon a Time. I mean, we already met Maleficent.

Neuschwanstein CastleAlso, we visited the Pinakothek museums in Munich and I saw this polyptych (with four panels) called “The Fairy-Tale of Cinderella.” It was by an Austrian artist, Moritz von Schwind. Mind you, this was back in May of 2011, long before OUAT aired. It was impossible to get a full photo of the triptych but basically, it chronicled the story of Cinderella.
I have other pics, but they’re blurry. I’m sure you could google it, you can see the whole thing.

Years ago, I studied German in high school for two years and my dad lived there in the army decages ago for a year or two and picked up the some of the language. Boy did that help when I had German class learning the language. I only took two years and retained more just talking to my dad than my sister did taking four years of Spanish class. My second year we studied Munich so if I ever went that’s the area I’d want to go to.
If I remember my German correctly, the cave room was in honor of Richard Wagner. Ludwig was obsessed with Wagner. The castle was also never finished, wasn’t it. I do remember the banruptcy thing. One thing I hated, we had to sit through a video of Wagner’s “Der Ring Das Nibelungen.” Those Germans sure were intense.
Did you get to see Schloss Nymphenburg in Munich? It was modeled after the Palace of Versailles. That’s all I can really remember about it other than that it’s in Munich.
My dad said he got to see the Frankenstein’s castle where Mary Shelley supposedly based her novel. He said it looked like burned out ruins.
BTW, I hope we get to see Sleeping Beauty’s story, too. It was my favorite as a child and second only to “Beauty and the Beast”. Although it might be tied.

Unfortunately not. We found about that one after the fact. But we got to see Lindenhoff since it was packaged with Neuschwanstein day tour we purchased.
