This is a spoiler about episode 5 including the title “Once Upon a Tail”. http://www.wetpaint.com/once-upon-a-time/articles/once-upon-a-time-season-2-spoiler-dr-whales-past-with-spoiler-will-be-major

I expect that he probably won’t be either now, but those there’s been a lot of evidence people have dug up for both theories.
September 19, 2012 at 3:15 am #154067PheeParticipantTail, hey. With a title like that, surely there’s gotta be some sort of animal connection to his identity. But I’m sure I read somewhere during the last day or so that Little Mermaid won’t be early in the season, so I doubt he’s merfolk, and I’ve never bought the Monstro theory, but MANY have suggested it, making it incredibly unlikely, as they’ve hinted that it’ll be a huge reveal that no one’s guessed thus far.
September 19, 2012 at 3:28 am #154069lilredParticipantAlready decided he HAD to be Gulliver or Dr. Frankenstein…Quick, can anyone come up with evidence that works ‘tail’ into Frankenstein?
I wonder if the shock will somehow work into a ‘layered’ reveal. He was _____________ in fairytale land until Regina turned him into something else: possibly Monstro. He seems to be laughing at what appears to be Regina unable to cast a spell (just my opinion on the interaction, sure it’s wrong).
September 19, 2012 at 7:15 am #154073SlurpeezParticipantI’m trying to fit the clue of a tail with the Peter Pan, Merlin, or Frankenstein theories, but not having much success. Perhaps Once Upon a Tail fits the Cheshire Cat theory. At first, I thought no way, but now I’m starting to wonder. The Cheshire Cat could disappear, which might explain his missing limb. We’re supposed to find out his connection to Regina in episode 5. Could Dr. Whale have been her cat in FTL, since she’s a witch? The other options I can think of are a merman, Eeyore from Winnie the Poo, or some other animal with a tail. 😆
Recently, David Anders confirmed in an interview, “But you learn what world I come from, who I am and it’s really cool.” It sort of makes me wonder if he’s not from FTL at all but from another land.
Insider.com: You’re also starring on Once Upon A Time — what can you tease about season 2?
David: Oh man, you don’t even know. We just finished episode 5, which is gonna knock your socks off. I’m back in a big way! You’ll learn who Dr. Whale is – I’m the only fairytale character who hasn’t been revealed yet, but I promise you, I’m not just a womanizing lech who occasionally heals people. I’m still a ****-hound, but the magic is released so everyone is realizing who they are. We’re dealing with the magic in Stroybrooke first and the love stories will come later. But you learn what world I come from, who I am and it’s really cool. I think there was a poll of 10,000 people and six guessed who I am correctly. All is revealed in the Halloween episode. http://www.theinsider.com/movies/55507_David_Anders_Revenant_Interview_Once_Upon_A_Time_Season_2/index.htmlIf only 6 out of 10,000 people have managed to guess his true FTL identity, at least I won’t feel so bad when I discover how wrong I was. Does anyone know to which poll he’s referring in the interview? If we had access to the results, all we’d have to do is look at the option with the smallest number of people who replied “yes” to that category. 🙂

That’s what it looks like to me too. He seems to be standing up there beside her, but then her magic fails, and he laughs at her, then confronts her.

Well witches do traditionally have familiars, which are often portrayed as being cats. He was her lapdog in SB coz he was her cat in FTL? 😉 This Cheshire Cat theory could work. It’d certainly explain why he was still happily wandering around SB, even with a missing limb, because the Cat could make parts of his body disappear. The Cheshire Cat is famous for his grin, and Mr Anders has a sly one of those himself. I’ve already had Regina pegged as having a tie to Wonderland because I think Cora is QoH. I wonder if the Cat’s ability to appear and disappear anywhere at will meant that he was able to pop back and forth between worlds? Maybe he was Regina’s pet, and she’d send him back and forth between worlds to spy on QoH.
If Dr Whale has a Wonderland connection, perhaps he knew Jefferson, (actually, reading up on my Cheshire Cat facts just now, he was the one who told Alice which direction the Hatter lived in), which could explain why Jefferson knew about the hospital dungeon. Perhaps?

Was he just swearing for the helluvit, or was he dropping a hint? 😉

😆 WORD!
September 19, 2012 at 11:38 am #154081tylerParticipantAlthough it would be a major letdown, maybe he is Tootles, the only Lost Boy that wears a tail on his costume. Its a stretch, but because Neverland is really one of the only confirmed other worlds, it may be the answer. Its a shame because we are all hoping he has a more major part
September 19, 2012 at 11:40 am #154083midnight drearyParticipantI haven’t the slightest idea what this title could mean. NONE.
September 19, 2012 at 12:06 pm #154084hjbauParticipantI like the cheshire cat theory. It would be odd if he was a random character connected to no ones story so at least that would be a point of connection to Regina and Jefferson and potentially Cora.

Actually, this makes sense. David Anders recently gave an interview and (this is going to sound incredibly crude, so I apologize before hand) he literally called his character a “pussy hound”. Maybe that’s a clue. 😆
