Because so many people seem to question whether or not Phillip is dead or not, I figured I’d try to illuminate the possibilities as to how he could be alive in regards to the creature that sucked his soul from him.
Wraiths is essentially a catch-all Scottish term for ghosts & spectre both of which are defined as any incorporeal supernatural being that can become visible (or audible) to human beings.
I’d think each wraith would be a variation or different species & the one that most closely seems to fit with the one we saw take Phillip’s soul is a creature known as a Cyhyraeth.
Cyhyraeth which are known for being skeletal & noted for having a disembodied moaning voice that sounds before a person’s death ( which could possibly allude to Mulan’s having heard the voices of the souls this creature had already collected/devoured. )
In looking at Phillip’s not so certain demise, it is also pertinent to note the medallion which may now contain his soul.
I was provided with a link which attested to what the symbol on the medallion might mean ( you can find the link here. )
However, that rune / glyph is said to have other meanings, as someone in the chat last night pointed out, it also means ‘Swan’.
However, should it not be a rune or a symbol with any certain distinction, I set out to see if I could find a form of writing which had letters or numbers that seemed to match up with the symbol pictured on the medallion.
What I ended up finding was a dead script language known as Ge’ez ( link here ) wherein this symbol seemed to be a replica of both the letter H & the number 8. Referenced here as Heth which when translated via hieroglyph meant ‘courtyard‘ , which when reconstructed with another letter meant thread which I took to mean, might logically coincide with straw. ( And we all know who uses straw & may well be using alchemy to turn it into gold, yes? )

I really like that.

Right after gold says: yours is particularly unpleasant.

October 2, 2012 at 3:12 am #155022hannah97ParticipantPhillip has got to be alive. He’s just got to. I refuse to believe that he is dead. Yes, his soul got sucked out, but it had to go somewhere… maybe Mulan and Aurora can go on a quest to get it back?

Therein, that is how Regina avoids having her soul sucked because Phillip was marked at the same time in conjunction with the SB timeline & so the wraith was none the wiser that this was a different person. The wraith just wants the soul of the person who has been marked, simple as that.
@ jonathanmorgan They do seem to make a point of using symbols & stories which can be interpreted with a litany of different results. It’s also interesting to note that the Grimm brothers also wrote/research the etymology of runes & so that’s a possible tie-in.
@ Marilou I was hyper-focusing on one side but I went back & went frame by frame & you’re right. There is something embossed on the other side of the medallion. From what I can tell it looks to be an imprint of a leaf ( or perhaps some type of tree ). But being that it looks more like a leaf to me, I did some digging & if it is in fact a leaf, it seems to most match a birch leaf.
That being said, I found this interesting bit about birch trees :
If strips of birch bark are gathered beneath the new moon, one can write a short spell requesting true love before burning it with specific love related incense or by casting it into a stream or other body of flowing water. Since the birch is for new beginnings though, the spell must not be said with a particular person in mind or it might corrupt or even turn the spell into a curse.
Also if you go by the Celtic Tree Alphabet ( known as Ogham ) then birch is called Beith. In keeping with Celtic lore, it’s also believed that these trees are associated with the land of the dead ( in Gaelic folklore ), so that symbol on the reverse of the medallion might have an association with death or returning from the grave.
Birch also utilizes the Proto-Germanic rune called Berkanan, which states that birch trees are regarded as sacred and associated with spring fertility rites. Norse myth also associates the birch tree as sometimes being labeled as the world tree ( Yggdrasil ). All this being said though, most Anglo-Saxon & Mezzo-American languages had runes so I could list tons but I think these were the pertinent ones to the other symbol you had mentioned.
@ Hannah I think that both Mulan & Aurora will embark on this quest & they’ll probably enlist Snow & Emma because they’ll feel it’s their fault. Where Snow & Emma will agree because in a way, it is their fault because they brought the wraith back because they’d mistakenly thought they’d be banishing it to oblivion ( which in retrospect – it’s a good thing this piece of FTL still existed otherwise poor Snow & Emma would have been trapped in a void with that thing & well, … it probably wouldn’t have ended well. )
