Could Whale be Hades? If the Storybrooke occupations have anything to do with their other selves, doctors work with the sick and dying and it was Hades’ job to guide souls to their final resting place. And given his history with Zeus getting Olympus, Hades would be sure to have a problem with authority figures, hence the “not my prince” comment. It would also explain why no one knew who he was. And it also would be in line with Whale’s womanizing. Plus…maybe that would set up a trip to the underworld to go reclaim Phillip’s sucked out soul!!! Of course, this isn’t technically a fairy tale so it’s probably not right, but it’s an interesting theory.
And then I found this from the OUAT FB page: http://images.wikia.com/once/images/6/6c/016_Archie%27s_notes_on_Dr_Whale.jpg
I honestly didn’t see that before I came up with my Hades crack theory, but this even supports it!
Archie notes that Whale has:
-an inflated sense of self
-classic “god” complex
-frames himself as a victor in all conflicts
-feel persecuted and misunderstood – paranoia?Think about it!! It matches with all the references to hell he’s made through season 1 too!

I think I’ll throw my hat into the ring & saw I agree with you.
Whale in my opinion is probably Hades; as you’ve stated.October 4, 2012 at 2:31 am #155361marilouParticipantok, I think there is a little misunderstanding, people saw the word “god” and ran with it;
wikipedia says:
A person with a god complex may refuse to admit the possibility of error or failure, even in the face of complex or intractable problems or difficult or impossible tasks, or may regard personal opinions as unquestionably correct.
Long story short, someone with a “god complex” is a big poser. If Whale was an actual god, there would be no complex, he would not have to refuse to admit the possibility of failure because there is no possibility of failure when you are a god. The fact that Archie diagnose Whale with said “god complex” makes him desperately human.
October 4, 2012 at 2:48 am #155364surayyaParticipantWhile in the newest clip out, he wants to know if he can date the nuns …so yeahhhhhh- I’m now stumped as the womaniser thing seems to be a biggie 😕

Ah, yes, but at the time this diagnosis was supposedly made, wouldn’t he have in fact been “desperately human…” Remember that there were no actual gods in Storybrooke (or princes, or dwarves, or fairies…)

if I’m screwing up the date then… touché! my friend.
however nothing indicates that those notes (or diagnosis) were not made AFTER the curse was broken. we don’t know that Storybrook is in present time. One of the main theories is that SB is in 2007. Besides, here is a link to one the original Whale diagnosis sheet
http://once.wikia.com/wiki/File:016_Archie%27s_notes_on_Dr_Whale.jpg
the date at the top says 2019 – Since then the app as been changed and now indicates 2009 *i think* but I still take it as a hint that these note were taken after the curse was broken.October 4, 2012 at 3:50 am #155374briannabooParticipantI’m still going with it. Even if it was after the curse broke, no one knows who he is and no one has any power right now except Regina and maybe Rumpel. The argument that he can’t have a god complex and be a god only works if the person making the statement knows he was a god!
I’m not saying I’m right, but its a heck of a lot better than the Frankenstein theory IMHO. It would even mesh well with the Halloween themed episode with the whole dead, underworld thing.
October 4, 2012 at 7:28 am #155398surayyaParticipantI gotta admit, I’m worried about them adding the whole Frankie element … I just cant see how it will work well, one’s based on science the other what science say’s cant exist … so yeah, at this point I’d rather a character from Mythology than one from Sci Fy, at least then it’s in keeping with the spirit of the show.
I just hope it doesn’t nose dive if they do start diluting FTL with outside stuff 🙁October 8, 2012 at 10:42 pm #156118soulsurf7ParticipantI like the God theory but I’m not convinced it would be Hades. I HATE the Frankenstein theory… better not be that or I’ll be super pissed!
October 8, 2012 at 10:47 pm #156119obisgirlParticipantI like this theory. As some have already pointed, we saw Midas and he’s from Greek mythology so I don’t think it would totally out there for Whale to be Hades.
