I have a theory about why some people were brought to Storybrooke and then some were left behind in fairytale land. I don’t think the curse randomly picked people to deposit into Storybrooke. Certain people were selected to be taken by the curse. I mean, let’s look at who was sent. Almost all characters were somehow connected back to three core characters: Rumpelstiltskin, Regina and Snow White.
Everyone else not “directly” connected with the exception of Cora and Hook, were left behind in fairytale land. Cora, I understand because Regina doesn’t want her own mother undermining the curse and Hook, well, Rumpelstiltskin hates him.
Even Aurora mentioned in “Broken” that she heard of Regina but I doubt, had any real contact with her.
Does that make sense?

And since it was Regina and Rumple that brought the curse to Storybrooke in the first place, I bet they could have picked and chose who they wanted to be there. Regina probably wanted anyone that knew Snow to come so they would never get their happily ever afters. And the others were just people Rumple and Regina did not want to see happy in some ways. And the fact that Cora is not there makes sense because Regina probably doesn’t want to see her. I am just confused why Hook is not there if they can control it because I would think that Rumple would want revenge for Hook taking the bean. I am guessing that maybe Cora had a spell to keep her, Hook, and some of the others away from Storybrooke.
