THEORY: The Blue Fairy is the True Puppet-Master

I believe that the Blue Fairy is actually the puller of string pullers. The Doctor may have shown us that Rumpel is the reason for Regina turning to evil… But he’s not as wholly responsible as we may think.

THEORY: THE BLUE FAIRY IS THE TRUE PUPPET-MASTER, AND MASTERMIND BEHIND THE DARK CURSE.

Fairies are good, aren’t they? They grant wishes, save children, all that warm and fuzzy stuff, don’t they?

Remember in Snow Falls when Snow White had that necklace of dust? Fairy dust. A weapon. When the dust comes from a bad fairy, it’s a curse. It’s weaponized. So we’ve now established that fairies can be bad. Now you can hear out my thoughts on Blue.

So first, think guys: When is the first time – chronologically – that we hear about the Blue Fairy?

It’s during season one, in The Return, where Baelfire is speaking to his friend Morraine about the troubles with his father. Morraine calls her “Reul Ghorm”… Which doesn’t sound as innocuous as “Blue Fairy” now, does it? Reul in fact has alternate meanings of “Ruler”, so Blue Fairy is obviously some serious shit.

Morraine heard about Reul Ghorm while she was in the trenches. Interesting how she was in the right place at the right time to hear some soldiers talking about it, just enough that she could pass the information along to the son of the Dark One. Morraine tells us that Reul Ghorm is “an ancient being that rules the night”. The night, really? Not daytime? Sunshine? Butterflies? Rainbows? Night-time. Monsters, dreams, nightmares, things that go bump in the night. She also calls Reul Ghorm “The original power”. Not “A” original power. “THE” original power. Whoa. Whoa whoa whoa, that’s pretty intense. And that means, if she is the original, she has powers of BOTH good and evil, as there would have been no balance without it. (Sidenote: I think this possibility means that she created the Dark One, or had some other hand in the birth of it)

Finally Baelfire, curious, asks: Bigger than Papa, or worse than Papa?

Morraine tells him: Bigger than anything.

Morraine doesn’t say anything about Reul Ghorm being a good thing. In fact she ignores his question of Reul Ghorm being worse than the dark one. So we know that this being is more powerful than The Dark One, and the viability of a “Yes, worse than the Dark One” answer is still completely viable.

Next, Baelfire wishes Reul Ghorm to come to him, to help him with his wish. And of course she appears. She says she can help and when Baelfire asks how he can know whether to trust her or not, what is response? Must be something positive and fairy-like, something clear and helpful. No. “Because there is good magic and dark magic, and I’m on the right side.” She doesn’t say “I’m on the good side”. That’s what you would expect to hear. Instead the writers make her purposefully ambiguous. When she appears to Rumpelstiltskin after Baelfire has disappeared into the portal, she tells him they have no other beans. He calls her on a lie, and she claims they don’t do that.

Uh.

Excuse me?

We’ve seen fairies lie. In fact, in the episode directly following this one (This is 1×19, next episode is 1×20, The Stranger) we see Blue totally cool with lying. If it serves her, anyways. Just look at this scene with Rumpelstiltskin. Guess what? She lies. She tells him there is no curse, no such thing that could bring him to Bae. We know that there’s a curse. To me, it looks like a manipulation of Rumpel. The point that put the wheels of the curse into motion is when Baelfire is lost to Rumpelstiltskin. Blue has shown us in other episodes that she has some level of future sight like the Dark One does (and as Morraine tells us, it is probably more powerful) so she knows that by doing this – by helping Baelfire leave his father, by having this encounter with Rumpel and telling him that no curse exists (egging him on, making him more passionate about the idea) sets the entire thing into motion.

After the episodes We Are Both and The Doctor we are supposed to believe that Rumpelstiltskin manipulated Regina into turning evil. That he has been orchestrating nearly everything we’ve seen on the show, making sure certain things happen that will lead to a perfect curse. But wait. Why didn’t Blue show up for Regina? Regina wished for help for a long time before she called Rumpelstiltskin. Blue had many an opportunity to appear for Regina and help her, point her in the right direction, keep the evil that she would become from ever being a possibility. But she doesn’t.

If she was a good fairy, why the frig would she ignore such a pivotal person’s development? Why would she leave Regina open to the machinations of Rumpelstiltskin? The man who would ensure that she would enact the curse. The person that he needed to make it happen.

Because she wants the curse to happen. This has been her plan all along. Rumpel may have been pulling the strings for 200-300 years… But Blue has been pulling the strings for eternity – she is THE original power, after all.

So now that we’ve established all of that, let’s look at Blue’s relationships and encounters with other characters. When the curse is finally upon them, what is Blue’s first thought? What action does she propose? Not fight, not find a way to stop Regina – “save the child”. Not “The World”. Not “The Kingdom”. Not “Snow and the child.” Just “Save the child.” How? By sending her to another world. And this is a theme of Blue’s. Sending children alone to other worlds. Bae and Emma.

When we first see the war council scene, Blue turns to Geppetto and asks him if he can make the wardrobe… After we’ve seen The Stranger though, the writers show us the scene again. We think it is to show what Geppetto has done, but I think it is also to make us more suspicious of Blue’s facade. She’s spoken to Geppetto, she knows he will do it. She doesn’t say “I’ve spoken to Geppetto and he has agreed to make the wardrobe” she makes a scene about it. Why? What purpose does that serve her? We also see her easily lie to the Council about the wardrobe only taking one. She manipulates them all.

Just like she has been for years.

Look at the war council, who do we have on it? Snow, Charming, Jiminy, Geppetto, Grumpy (+2 other dwarfs), Granny, Red and four unknown soldiers… One of whom may be Lancelot, now that we’ve seen Lady of the Lake.

How has Blue affected these people?

Grumpy – Wouldn’t even be there if he hadn’t stopped Dreamy and Nova from being in love and sailing off together. And remember that Grumpy is the reason Snow escaped King George, Grumpy and the other dwarfs were an incredibly important part of Snow’s life… And he wouldn’t have been there if Blue hadn’t forced him and Nova apart. Taken their love away because they had something more important to do.
Two Dwarfs – Who knows how the other dwarfs would have lived if not for having Grumpy in their life?
Jiminy – Wouldn’t even be alive. He would have lived the remainder of his life thieving with his parents before dying alone and unhappy. Seems like she did him a favour, right? I’m going to talk about Jiminy again after this.
Geppetto – Geppetto would have been a completely different person without Jiminy’s influence, which is thanks only to Blue. She also turned Pinocchio into a real boy, Geppetto responding by acknowledging he didn’t know how he could ever repay her. He sees himself in her debt. More on Geppetto in Jiminy’s section later.
Snow & Charming – She trapped Rumpelstiltskin, helping not only Cinderella, but the entire kingdom. And when Snow was trying to save Charming from King George/Regina? Blue lead the fairy attack.

We don’t know about her influence on Granny, Red or the soldiers… Not yet anyways, but that’s more than half. Most of them owe her something.

Jiminy Cricket
First off… For Blue being so much more powerful than the Dark One, she sure shows a limitation to her power. We’ve only seen her cast three spells in her time on the show, but more importantly, we’ve heard her say that she “Cannot bring back the boys parents” Uh… Really? You’re the original power, and you can’t turn those puppet people into humans? Really? As we know fairies lie, we can choose whether or not to believe Blue here, but we can neither prove or disprove what she says at this point.

Whatever you think, we know Jiminy is willing to give up his life to make amends. And Blue offers him that chance but… Why? And why a cricket? Perhaps because that way, he can have no human relationships, no friendships, outside of Geppetto and Pinocchio, no romantic relationship. Blue is willing to take all of this away – or ignore that it could have existed for Jiminy – for the sake of guiding Geppetto. Why? Well…

Geppetto
Why did Geppetto have to be the one to build the wardrobe? Surely there are many other carpenters in The Enchanted Forest. When Geppetto made the demand to have his son take the second place, to save him from becoming wood again, the Fairy could have said “Alright, I’ll go find someone else.” No. It had to be Geppetto. Something was special about him. She set in motion 50+ years prior to this, Jiminy guiding Geppetto. Jiminy had to in order for Geppetto to become the man who could build an enchanted wardrobe and save Emma from the curse. 50+ years ago the curse wasn’t a concern, Regina wasn’t even born, and yet… Blue was setting everyone up, pulling the strings.

So…
Remember that Blue is the reason Rumpelstiltskin is able to be frozen and imprisoned. So why exactly couldn’t she do something similar to Regina? Why couldn’t she have foreseen that Regina would enact the curse, and take it/trade it from Maleficent so Regina couldn’t get it? Why couldn’t she protect Regina’s father, so that he couldn’t be killed for his heart? Blue wants the curse to happen. She just wants it to be broken. The same way that Rumpel wants the curse to happen, just so that it can break.

The Blue Fairy is the true puppet master. She has been orchestrating all of this from the beginning, and letting everyone else think that it’s Regina’s fault. That it’s Rumpelstiltskin’s fault. What does she want in our world? What are her reasons for spending an eternity ensuring this would happen? Is she representative of Destiny/Fate? Does she guide things along the only path they are allowed to follow, quashing anything that deviates from the “plan”, or does she have a personal reason for wanting the curse to occur?

Either way, all of the events truly trace back to her. And that’s why
