Wow!!!!! How did I miss this????? In the episode Broken, we see the Mystery Man aka Neal Cassidy, exiting Central Park at 7th St and then ending up at the end of his LONG walk on the southeast corner of Central Park. The question has been hanging out there….WHY THE LONG DETOUR??? I think I figured it out! He went to the corner of 7th St and 47th St and made a wish at the Times Square Wishing Wall of Hopes and Dreams! The real Neal Cassady was drawn to Times Square repeatedly through his life. Allen Ginsberg, one of Neal Cassady’s friends wrote a poem called, Back on Times Square dreaming of Times Square . The Times Square Wishing Wall of Hopes and Dreams is a place for visitors to write down the hopes and dreams on colored pieces of confetti paper which is then mixed in with the confetti when the ball is dropped on New Year’s Eve.
Let’s go back to Season 1…the pilot episode…it starts with Emma (Henry’s mom) out in the city doing her bailbondsperson thing…she then goes back to her apartment…kicks off her shoes…she’s looking tired and alone…she pulls out that cupcake…picks the blue star candle from a bundle of colored candles, sticks it in the cupcake and makes a wish…..then DING DONG…she lifts her head…there is someone at the door. Her wish has been answered…she is not alone on her birthday and Henry her little boy has come to find her.
Now…let’s look at the first episode of Season 2…it starts with Neal (Henry’s dad) out in the city walking a route that exits Central Park at 7th St., ends up on 47th St…and continues on until he eventually is back at the southeast corner of Central Park. I think he made the long detour to go to Times Square Visitor Center on 7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets where he made a wish at the New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall of Hopes and Dreams. He wrote his wish on a piece of colored confetti and sticks it in the wall. Then, he ends up back at his apartment…looking tired and alone…he tosses his stuff on the bed…we hear CLUNK CLUNK (his cell phone falling down the fire escape) he lifts his head and there is someone at the window, it is a white bird (like in the wishing well scene of Snow White) with a post card telling him the curse is broken. His wish has been answered!
If he didn’t make a wish then I think we are supposed to get it that he walks right by without making a wish…either way…I think this wall is the reason for the detour.
The parallels both similar and opposite between these two scenes are striking.
Attire:
Emma – looking beautiful
Neal – in a suit but a little frumpyActivity:
Emma – out on a set up date with a jerk that has skipped out on his wife and family, taken the money and is cheating on his wife..out on a date with another woman.
Neal – walking away, looking over his shoulder, listening to a song about Charley’s Girl, she’s gonna turn you in, watch out. From Emma’s perspective it looks like he skipped out on her and the baby, took the money etc.Apartments:
Emma’s apartment has a door with orderly writing. Emma’s apartment is beautiful, sleek, and upscaleNeal’s apartment has graffiti outside the door (also makes me think of the door across the hall from Emma in the pilot…the one with the dark scribbles on it) Henry stands between both of the doors.
Neal’s apartment is run down and anything but sleek
I really think that Neal is cheating, running, hustling…
Where Emma is out catching cheaters, runners and hustlersShould be an interesting reunion!!!

The New Year is a time of reflection filled will hopes and dreams for the future. I love to make wishes and dream about things that are wonderful and amazing. When it’s my birthday, I blow out the candles with a wish for an unbelievable year. When I see a shooting star I take a deep breath and wish for such good things to happen. Yes, I also grab one of the kids whenever deboning a chicken or turkey and we grab the wishbone hoping our own wishes and dreams come true. One annual New Year’s tradition in New York City’s Times Square is the Wishing Wall , the chance for visitors from all over the world to write their dreams and wishes on official Times Square New Years Eve confetti. The wishes are placed on the Carnival New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall located in the Times Square Visitor Center on 7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets. If you’re in NYC, get a cup of hot chocolate in NYC and stop by the Wishing Wall. At the end of the year, the wishes are collected and placed with the confetti that flutters down on Times Square at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Be sure to check out our tips for New Year’s Eve in Times Square, if you decide to brave the New York City crowds and watch the ball drop at midnight.

November 10, 2012 at 7:40 pm #160202NobodyParticipantIt seems like you are really reaching on this one…I think it’s interesting that he walks by that wall but to go on about how he made a wish…I think there’s more important things to focus on. Is there any way you can merge your four topics together since they all come back to the same conclusion that Neal is Bae…it would make things a lot easy for people wanting to discuss it if it were all in one place.

Surprised you didn’t throw in that he stopped at MacDonalds half a block up and grabbed a McChicken because he could not shake off his cowardly father.

I stumbled upon it accidentally…when doing a search for a poem. Emma’s wish matches up with the Disney song, “When you wish upon a star”, and if Neal made a wish it would match up with the Disney song, “I’m Wishing”.
November 11, 2012 at 1:56 pm #160261NobodyParticipantHow do you figure that?
November 11, 2012 at 6:20 pm #160307TheGoldenKeyParticipantNeal never was on 7th & 47th. He exited the park at the corner of 7th Ave and Central Park E. He then turned left and continued heading eastbound on the north side of Central Park E which turns into E 59th Street. At the corner of Madison Ave, he then turned right and headed southbound. We then see him cross from the west side of Madison Ave. over to the east side. This was at the intersection of Madison & E 47th Street. At no time was there any indication whatsoever that he was in the area of Times Square. Had he wanted to go to Times Square he would have headed straight down 7th Avenue, right out of Central Park.
