Emma can tell when somebody is lying to her, what if Belle has a power that she can see the inner self of somebody else like Rumpelstiltskin and Ruby.

She is a reader after all, and even if it is not a “proper” gift, it is actually the sort of wisdom that written words give according to popular knowledge. We find this idea constantly in Shakespeare and afterward in the Romantics.
The idea works for me ^^November 12, 2012 at 8:33 am #160359PheeParticipantIt was so touching when Belle was talking to Red, and I was thinking, “Belle’s good at trying to bring out the good in self confessed beasts,” and it was making me a tad emo…and then Belle said as much herself, and I had to laugh at the way she worded it.
Trickster, I like your choice of the word “reader”. Makes me think of people who can read auras and those types of psychic readings. Turns out she’s not just a reader of books, but also a reader of souls.
I’m glad she and Red have become friends. When I first saw the spoiler pics of them in the diner together a few eps ago, I wasn’t sure that it’d develop into a genuine friendship, so it’s good to see that it has.

I’m glad Ruby and Belle are becoming best friends too. I loved the Beauty and the Beast parallels in the episode Sunday.

And despite seeing the good in people, she clearly misses the bad–Rumpelstiltkin has still lied to her numerous times, and hid the posters that she made of her father. The only ability she really has is being tied up–sorry if that sounds cruel, but this is the fourth time that she was chained up or locked up, either because she was pawn or because it was for her own good.
November 14, 2012 at 1:29 am #160671the fairestParticipantUm, I’m really not going to come down on Belle for being chained up all the time, considering all the times Emma and Snow have either been kidnapped, poisoned, tricked by shifty reporters, constantly manipulated by Rumpel and Regina, or left in Elevator shafts. 😆
And yes, Rumpel has lied to her. A LOT. But that’s why she left him at the end of “The Crocodile.” She’s not moving back in until she’s noticed a real change in his behavior.

Good point. 😆 Emma and Snow have ahd their fair share of embarrassing moments of weakness too. In fact, that was my main complaint about their characters in season 1. For the heroes, the writers portrayed them in a remarkably weak light. 🙁
November 14, 2012 at 1:39 am #160675elleParticipantIt just shows how it constantly happens to her, and yet she takes it. Ruby chained her up for her own good, and yet she showed no anger to it. Prince Charming himself had said to call if the mob were on their way to the library, which meant that Belle would be in danger being all chained up. Granted, they found Ruby quickly, but the fact that Belle had no anger towards that shows how she is sort of used to it.
Also, she pretty quickly forgives Rumpelstiltskin for all that he does–he locked her up, threw her away from the castle, and put her in danger of encuring the wrath of the Evil Queen. He probably never told her how he beat her father to a pulp, and got rid of her posters, and never once apologized for any of that.
It is hard to explain (and I really do like her) but she hasn’t really done much except get kidnapped, rescued, and then talk about how she makes her own choices.
November 14, 2012 at 1:42 am #160676elleParticipantEmma was the one portrayed a bit weakly, but that was due to her not knowing anything about the curse in season 1. And this season, she is starting to pull herself slowly–she managed to see Captain Hook for who he really was, she gave herself and the group a headstart, and she got the compass.
I never saw Snow White as incompetant in the show–Mary Margaret was, but not Snow White, and that all due to the curse. Yes she got kidnapped a few times, but she got herself out of the situation many times. 🙂
November 14, 2012 at 1:50 am #160678snowfallsParticipantBut to be fair, there isn’t much Belle can do at the moment. She hasn’t been trained to fight, and even though she was thrown out on her own, the Evil Queen kidnapped her before she could learn to defend herself like Snow did. Snow had to learn how to use a sword and survive on her own because of all her years on the run from the Evil Queen. Regina snatched up Belle before she could get the chance.
And I think she does make her own choices. She offered herself up to Rumpel to save her father and her village, she told Rumpel off before she left his castle for being a coward, she told him off again in “The Crocodile” and even gave her father a piece of her mind, and she finally left Rumpel at the end of the same episode.
