I think that Hook is actually on Cora’s side, despite everything that he has claimed.
Remember what he said when Emma and Mulan and MM were with him the first time? They didn’t believe him for a second…well, Emma didn’t. Then he realized he wasn’t going to win and he said, “Cora sent me to gain your trust…” something along those lines. If you watch what happens after this, what is he doing? He is gaining their trust. In a small battle between an ogre, they would probably protect him. Emma shut him out, cause she started to trust him.
Also there is the fact that Cora gave him all this magic protection against what they would have to face at the beanstalk. She gave it to him. The stuff for her use, too. I mean…why?
What do you guys think? I’m not taking this theory as my own yet…just bringing up possibilities. đŸ™‚

Not good or evil, just entirely self-serving and dedicated to his revenge. The most important thing to him is finding a way to finally kill Rumpelstiltskin and avenge Milah, not picking a side in someone else’s fight.
It’s possible that Hook demanded Cora leave him with the beanstalk-climbing things when she left him at the ruined camp, so he could be sure that she would actually come back for him and not just go off on her own. He’d need a guarantee like that, because he couldn’t risk just being left there on his own with no way out – his priority is to get to Storybrooke, and if Cora left with the ability to get the compass, he’d never get there, because she wouldn’t exactly come back and give him a lift if there wasn’t anything in it for her.

When he produced that second magical cuff and was all, “Well, Cora was gonna come with me, but I guess one of you guys can wear this now,” I called shenanigans! As if Cora was ever gonna hitch up her skirts and scramble up a beanstalk. đŸ˜†
Up until Emma chained Hook up, everything had gone according to Cora’s plan. Hook needs more than just the compass to get to SB, he also needs the sparkly dirt, and Cora still has that. So his easiest option would have been to grab the compass and run back to Cora. If he’d stuck with the others, they’d have had to steal the sparkly dirt somehow, and that’s far more complicated for him. I do think that if circumstances changed, a new travel option came up, and the others could get to SB without Cora’s sparkly dirt, Hook would stick with them, but I think that as things currently stand, he needs Cora just as much as she needs him, and it’s no skin off his nose if Emma & Snow don’t get home.

His only goal is to kill Rumpelstiltskin, and perhaps once he gets to Storybrooke, he will find enjoyment in pirating a bit.

I know, tis all true. But I have a feeling Cora has more to offer him than Emma does.

That’s something that’s been bothering me as well. Cora is an extremely powerful sorceress. She was taught by the Dark One himself. Why would she need the help of a pirate?

Maybe she just needed someone to do the heavy lifting? Prehaps distract the giant while she got the compass, things like that? It might even be that whatever ritual she needs to do to get them home requires two people, or she can’t read the compass for some reason… or maybe there’s a third thing she needs and Hook is the one who has it? Plenty of reasons she might want to keep him around.
November 16, 2012 at 8:39 am #160975becParticipantI’m thinking that it has to do with when he met her in past fairytale land (assuming Cora is the Queen of Hearts). Maybe he owes her a favour or something. Because both of them are independent, it just seems too suspicious.
November 16, 2012 at 12:47 pm #160985TheGoldenKeyParticipantI think Hook is in it for Hook. He’ll use anyone to get what he wants which is of course revenge on Rumple. Right now, he probably thinks all the cards are in Cora’s favour, so that’s where his allegiance will lie.
