Did Gold have an ulterior motive for giving that necklace to Henry or was he just being nice to the boy. I hope he didn’t have an ulterior motive because he always been nice to Henry especially in last season’s episode “The Return” when Henry wanted a gift for Mary Margaret.

But I think at least part of it is him being nice, because he actually seems fond of kids.
November 12, 2012 at 8:16 am #160371PheeParticipantWell, I think he may need Emma back in town to help him break the barrier curse so he can get out of town. Rumple may well assume that the person Henry saw in his dream was Snow, (given that they’ve both been under the sleeping curse), so if he could help Henry to gain enough control to communicate with her, that could lead to a way for Emma to get back so that he can ask for that infamous favour. Much as I wanna eventually see my boy Rumple redeemed, I doubt this gesture was purely out of the goodness of his heart.

And, he kind of took a big risk with Henry’s life in A Land Without Magic, so he might be trying to make up for that. Also, he knows what it’s like to be terrified of something, so I think he sympathised with Henry a bit there.

You raise a really good point, which I hadn’t even considered. It’d make a lot of sense for Gold to help Henry if he thought it meant Emma would return to SB to carry out a favor for him. At least Mr. Gold didn’t name a price, so maybe he is learning to be a better man. Plus, I still think that Mr. Gold has a genuine soft spot for Henry, and showed a paternal concern (perhaps because Henry reminds Gold of Baelfire, which makes sense if Henry is his son).

1: I think he is actually trying to change.
2: He IS generally nice to children. I suspect it’s because of Bae.
3: He does seem to like Henry well enough.
BUT these factors, although I think they’re true, aren’t enough for Gold.
I also think that
4: Henry gives him a link to outside realms. If he’s stuck in Storybrooke with essentially no way out, any link to the outside is very helpful.
5: Henry might be able to find out where Hook is for him? If he can communicate/control other realms, surely Henry wouldn’t be adverse to just… asking if Hook is around.
6: Henry is maybe the only person, besides Emma, who can leave Storybrooke. And he’s connected to Emma. So if he can get into their good books, it’s not altogether unselfish. haha.
Any thoughts? Agree/disagree?

Agree with pretty much all of that post, saimejoxxers. I’m not thinking that Hook is even on Rumple’s radar at the moment though. It’ll be a nasty little surprise when he shows up in SB looking for revenge.

He has manipulated all the adults in the series, has only been on his own side, done all he has done for power, for his son and for Belle. But he has always seemed truly fond and kind towards Henry, even when the latter was obviously uncomfortable and untrusting of him.
He continuely is all kind smiles, polite, honest, and open (to an extent, and more so than with others) with him. Episodes 4, 8, 16, 19, and 22 of season one are key episodes that show how fond he is of Henry.
Much of this is because Henry must remind Him of Baelfire–both are brave, devoted, determined, and well-behaved and respectful children. They both even look a bit alike. I think he also has a great amount of respect for Henry–the latter is one of th smartest people on the show. He was the one in season one who could indentify who was who in Storybrooke, he was the one to help Emma be able to help them, he was able to keep Emma in Storybrooke, and he knew to not trust Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin and g to him for help. He kept his distance from the man, and rarely went to him for help–this weeks episode being the first time. ๐
