Did anyone else notice what a tender spot Mr. Gold has for Henry? It was so heart-felt and paternal. Mr. Gold made a house call for Henry and didn’t charge a price for his services by providing Henry with an enchanted necklace to help Henry control his actions while asleep. When else has Gold ever been so tender with a child except his own son, Baelfire? I think this is another huge indicator that Mr. Gold could be Henry’s grandfather.

So I don’t think there is a reason behind his paternal attitude towards Henry. Not in the bad sense -like a hidden intention, as.. i don’t know, use him for his own pourposes- neither a good one -being his grandson. (even if Henry were, Mr. Gold can’t know it) –
It is probably just that he is fond of children. He was even before being cursed, and probably losing his son increases this part of his personality.November 12, 2012 at 12:03 pm #160387SlurpeezParticipant@TheTrickster wrote:

Granted, we know Rumpel saved the children from the Ogres War, because he was motivated to save his son, Baelfire. Yes, we’ve only seen Rumpel make a deal with one child, Bae (which he broke). Yet, we have heard of Rumpel being very manipulative when it comes to other people’s children, as if they were property to be traded: the curse seperated Emma from her family, Gold tried to gain Cinderella’s baby, he procured David’s twin brother, he procured baby Henry for Regina, and he very possibly tried to take Cora’s baby, Regina, to mold her into his apprentice. Not only did the parents pay a huge price for deals they made, but so did the children suffer as a result. Belle was right when she said that he toys with words like he does people. Rumpelstiltskin wasn’t as interested in the welfare of other people’s children as he was in his own gain. With him, it’s never something for nothing, except in the case of Henry.

Both Henry and Baelfire are very brave, heoric, and concerned for the welfare of others. We saw in “Desperate Souls” how Mr. Gold gave Emma the walkie talkies to communicate with Henry, saying how quickly children grow up and then they’re gone. We saw in An Apple Red as Blood how nice Mr. Gold was about helping Henry choose a bell for Mary Margaret. Also, in Land Without Magic, Mr. Gold knew that Emma’s son would be the key to breaking the curse and knew he’d be alright when Emma kissed him. I think this espiode, Child of the Moon showed a strong paternal concern on Mr. Gold’s part for Henry. Taken together, all of these instances could indicate that Henry and Rumpelstiltskin have a deeper connection than one might first suspect.

Mr. Gold: Well, look. Your boy might like these, don’t you think? You could play together.
(He holds up a pair of walkie talkies.)
Emma: I don’t-
Mr. Gold: No, please. They… They grow up so fast.
Emma: Thanks.
Mr. Gold: You enjoy these with your boy. Your time together is precious, you know? That’s the thing about children – before you know it, you lose them.
Same as last night. There was a genuine fondness & tenderness there. You could hear it in his voice and see it in his facial expressions, especially the eyes. I’d love to see more Henry & Mr. Gold moments. That scene was certainly the highlight of the episode for me.

walkie-talkies/dream-red room
interesting!!! good you pointed that out Goldenkey. But another thought. The situation with Henry and Rumple could also be seen, as a parallel to the situation back in the day with Regina and Rumple.
Rumple is ‘giving’ them both the means to learn to control magic in some way, so that they can get back what they have lost.
Henrys motivation to learn to control these dreams is to get his mother and Snow back from Fairytaleland. Reginas motivation to learn magic was to get Daniel back.November 12, 2012 at 1:40 pm #160397RumplesGirlKeymaster<3 Rumple <3
I think he sees a bit of Bae in Henry, a child who’s only family (Regina) is considered to be a the great evil, power hungry, who doesn’t fully understand what their child needs. I think the whole “no charge” is also a sign of how he’s trying to change.

Yes, I agree with both of you about why they’re showing Gold to be so nice to Henry because Henry reminds Gold of Bae because Henry is Bae’s son and Gold’s grandson.
Also agree that short scene was the highlight of “Child of the Moon” for me, especially since it made me realize how much I’ve really missed Robert Carlyle the past few episodes. I wonder if Emma and Snow return, they’ll continue trying to do more than two storylines at once or not because while I think there’s certainly been a lot more action at this point this season than last season, after this episode, I’m beginning to feel like one those fans that’s starting to hate that my favorites aren’t on that much like last season and that all these new characters keep coming in and stealing precious time from them. I even missed Regina a little, and didn’t like how she was sort of awkwardly inserted into this episode. I get that they’re all trying to get along for Henry’s sake, but just to leave her alone with Henry at the Charming’s residence is just not something that I think Charming would actually do at this point since it’s been only been about a week since she’s turned over a new leaf instead it felt like what it was, which is the writers needed some fast way to insert Regina and Rumple into the episode.

Yeah, I miss Rumpel a ton, too, and even Regina. But, fear not, for if you read the synopses for the next two episodes, you won’t be disappointed for much longer. 🙂

November 12, 2012 at 1:53 pm #160407GrimmsisterParticipantRumples “No charge” comment didn’t seem odd to you guys ??? considering that ALL MAGIC COMES WITH A PRICE !
Maybe its just me, not wanting all the ‘bad guys’ to turn good to fast 😀November 12, 2012 at 1:55 pm #160410RumplesGirlKeymasterI just finished re-watching this episode. RC is such a phenomenal actor. When he’s talking directly to Henry, his voice lowers, he seems more gentle. He’s very much Papa Rumple before the Dark One tricked him in Desperate Souls.
I’ve missed Rumple and Regina. They are two great forces and actors. Can’t wait until the next few episodes when it seems like they’ll be back in full force."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love" -
