Theory ( After watching the episode “The Crocodile” ): Belle came back home to her father and she told her father that she loved Rumpelstiltskin. Maurice didn’t like that so he brought people to cleanse her soul and try to get her from stop loving Rumpel. After all that, Belle still loved Rumpel, but Maurice didn’t like it so somehow he got in contact with Regina and told her to put his daughter in a tower and keep her away from Rumpel. After Regina got Belle into the tower, that is when she went to Rumpel and told him the truth about what happened to Belle except the ”death” part.

^Intersting theory. But there hasn’t been official confirmation on that. All we know is that Maurice tried to kidnap Belle in an effort to keep her away from Rumpel/Gold in Storybrooke. While back in the Enchanted Forest, Belle left Rumpel’s castle and was soon snatched up by the Evil Queen. I see the connection, but we still don’t have enough information on the matter.

I don’t think so Belle was happy to see her father up until he showed that he was still trying to control her. If he had locked her in a tower or shunned her I doubt she would have been that receptive to him at first.

Yeah, and he seemed surprised when she said she loved him, so that conversation clearly hadn’t happened in FTL.

Maybe there is a spell on Belle keeping her from knowing the full truth about how she got in Regina’s tower and her father’s involvement.

Like Regina cast a spell on Belle that would make her forget what her father had done thereby making it easier for them to reconcile? That’s very thoughtful of her. She would have had to cast one on her father too because Regina said that the reason he shunned her was because she fell in love with Rumple and it seemed like the first he heard of it was in their reunion.

I don’t think Maurice saw Belle again until Storybrooke when Rumple went to his shop the first time. Moe said something like “If I’d held out hope, she woud have survived such an encounter”. To which Rumple replied that Belle was alive and that she had tried to find Moe.

I wouldn’t put it past Regina to have gone to Maurice and told him that Belle had died whilst in Rumple’s clutches. Telling Rumple that Belle was dead because of her father’s actions would ensure that neither Rumple nor Maurice went looking for Belle.
