In the recent podcast they related HOOK not being afraid of Cora / being killed to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN …. Davy Jones ( Killian Jones) hid his heart in a box and could not be killed ( in Pirates) IT is theorized that HOOK took out his own heart and hid it……
It is theorized that HOOK is an omage to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Apparently many posters have been theorizing she is THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST.
They also discuss all the OZ related props/ referrals in OUaT.
MAYBE SNOW and EMMA just need to throw a bucket of water on Cora to do her in.

His association with a magical compass, his way with the ladies, the way he savoured that gold coin in the Giant’s stash was reminiscent of Jack sneaking a coin of the cursed gold, and they even had a line where he grumbled about wasting rum, probably a nod to Jack’s, “But why is the rum gone?!”
I’d be very surprised if Hook doesn’t have some connection to Davy Jones, being that they share a surname. Either Davy is his father, or perhaps Hook is Davy Jones himself. Either way, a connection to Davy Jones means a connection to hearts in boxes if they’re drawing inspiration from the PotC movies, so that could end up being a link to how Hook learned to take hearts.
Regarding Cora and the umbrella, I figured that’s just because it was raining that day, and a lady like Cora wouldn’t be standing around getting drenched, and practically speaking, they didn’t want her costume getting wet. In the promo she seems to be summoning a geyser, which she wouldn't be doing if she was scared of water.

The idea, that Hook might have taken his own heart and hid it somewhere, is obvious. But do the writers go for the obivous? We’ll see, someday, maybe.
¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯
December 1, 2012 at 11:01 pm #163145PriceofMagicParticipantI always thought Hook’s challenging Cora was him basically saying he wasn’t going down without a fight. Cora wouldn’t want to risk getting herself injured and she decided the crueller punishment for Hook would be to leave him in fairytale land with his revenge unfulfilled.
As for Hook being a nod to Captain Jack Sparrow, whilst I can see the connection with the compass, I think the rest of his attributes are just general pirate stereotype. Captain Jack Sparrow is such an iconic character that making Hook like him would stop Hook from being Hook and make him a ripped off Jack Sparrow if you know what I mean.
All magic comes with a price!

There’s no way they could have Captain Jack on this show, because no one else could ever play that role, but the character is a huge entity for Disney, so it’s expected they’d have nods to him, and it didn’t make Hook any less his own character IMO.

Yes, film/television pirates do share a lot of the same traits, but those things you mentioned were definitely nods to Jack Sparrow which makes sense because of how much money those make for Disney.

I wouldn’t be surprised by this because the villain taking out his heart or soul and hiding it somewhere else is a very common theme in folklore, and if Hook wants to go up against Rumple, he’s going to need all the tricks that he can to have his revenge. Plus, I can see a scenario where perhaps they kill Cora or banish her somewhere because I don’t think Barbara Hershey wants to be tied down to the show otherwise they would likely have made her a regular, but keeping Hook around as a threat even if they temporarily defeat him this season. So maybe they only think that they’ve killed/vanquished him, but he has an ace up his sleeve and comes back some point next season for another round.
