Rumplestiltskin had a master plan which he put in motion before the dark curse was unleashed. He needed a fairy godmother’s wand to harness the power of the newly-formed magical diamonds in the mines so that he could prevent Cora from coming to SB. Yet, up until 2×8, Mr. Gold seemed to believe that Cora had died, based on Regina’s report of seeing her mother’s body. Did Rumple really know Cora would survive and seek a way over? He said in an earlier episode in S2 that he knew a remanent of SB had survived. Did he know this was Cora’s doing?

He allowed Cinderella and her allies to lock him up in the mines of the EF so that he could leave the squid-ink-stained parchment with Emma’s name written on it in the cell, where he predicted she’d find it and break out. One thing I’m left questioning is why he did he do both? If he knew Emma would find the parchment to break free, why did Mr. Gold bother using the magical wand to block to well portal? Did he just want to cover all of his bases? Was it because he didn’t know about Emma’s innate magical ability to block Cora’s dark magic? Emma seemed to think that Mr. Gold rigged the entire thing, but he responded that while he created the curse, he didn’t create Emma. She’s the product of true love, and her ability to dodge Cora seemed to have surprised even the likes of Mr. Gold.

Well, I just keep wondering WHY he left the ink in his cell, if he didn’t believe Emma would make it? He was convinced it would be Cora who would make through the portal, yet he left some help in the cell? And if he’s such a mastermind, did he actually predict that Snow and Emma are going to come back to FTL by accident???? Because it looked like he did plan it, as you pointed out he even got the fairy wand! He is resourceful but something smells…

Maybe he can not see Cora, because she is so powerful. But he saw that Hook will be against Emma and he knew she could take care of him.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of having your bases covered. If one scenario doesn’t pan out, than you have to plan for another. With limited foresight I think he just wanted to plan for any possible event.

maybe Rumple is like jigsaw (from the horror movie franchise)

I assume nothing. I anticipate the possibilities and I let the game play out.

Yes but he left the ink in his cell with Emma’s name, how DID he know Emma (or anyone for that matter) will find it and use it? (and how did he know he would like that person to use it?) For all we know, Emma’s arrival to FTL was an accident!

He wrote Emma’s name down because he needed to remember it. Her name was the trigger that would make him regain his memories back. Remember, he begged Snow and Charming for Emma’s name in the pilot episode because he needed to hear it so that he would have a way to regain his memories when he arrived in Storybrooke.

better yet, how the heck did rumple snuck in ink and paper? He did not make it appear, it was an enchanted cell, so, they did not bother to make sure he did have anything on him before putting him in jail?

I think this makes the most sense. I would also like to mention that Rumple can glimpse the future, so maybe he didn’t know who would come from the portal, but he could tell that Emma would be trapped in there at some point.

Also, I have to point out what Gold said at the beginning of the episode. With David still asleep, they don’t even know if Snow received their message. So, even though he knows that Emma and Snow would defeat Cora if they had the ink, he has absolutely no idea of knowing whether or not they even know about it.

Maybe magic ink is like an all-purpose thing. Can instantly vaporize prison bars or stun evil witches. So it could have been used at any point to their advantage. ??
