I was a little bit confused this episode about where exactly they were fighting this creature. Was it supposed to be China or someplace? Because obviously that would be a little weird since they are in fairytale land. If she still is then does that mean she’ll have knowledge about our world and can help our characters somehow? How did she get to fairytale land? I guess that would make her the first person we’ve seen from our world going to other lands.

If it can jump time and space it is possible that Mulan is from China around the time she lived. She may have ended up in their world and had to learn the way of the land on her own. (So apparently one of the doors is a reference to when Buddhism was reaching China and that was around the time Mulan lived.
Or she is from a land that is similar to China but a sort of “fairytale world” for Chinese mythology.
I love the inclusion of different languages though from the book that Belle was reading and what Philip wrote that seemed to asian inspired…unless that is me.

January 15, 2013 at 1:55 am #168361timespacerParticipantI agree – I think she is just from a “China-like” realm in Fairy Tale Land, in the same way Snow and Charming are from a “medieval Europe-like” land, but not from any particular European country in our world. They have mixed tales from many lands and times. Speaking of anachronisms, did anybody else notice that in the midst of the medieval-like setting in “The Outsider” that some of the people were wearing 18th century style hats and one was wearing a 19th century style tophat?
January 15, 2013 at 4:23 am #168387eirelandParticipantIt has bugged me from the beginning that they are including Mulan in this series because her story (in the Disney movie) was based on events that happened in true life (the huns really existed and while the movie obviously took some liberties, the story of Mulan has existed in the Chinese culture as well). Additionally, while I love Jamie Chung and think she is doing an amazing job, she is not Chinese and I really hate when casting directors or whoever chooses who is going to play who lumps all Asians together.
IF the “Chinese” part of the story doesn’t come into play in this series, then whatever – a great actor is a great actor… however, Eddy and Adam talked about the Chinese aspect a bit in the official podcast, and the term Yaoguai means “demon” in Chinese, and Mulan talked about serving in the Emperors’ Army which resonates of the original story.
ANYWAYS… don’t mean to or intend to offend anyone (I just hate ethnic discontinuity in shows), but IF CHINA is important to the story, they should not have cast a non-Chinese actress and just hoped everyone would be like “oh, she must be Chinese cuz she is Asian” and IF China is NOT important to the story, stop putting Chinese stuff into it.January 15, 2013 at 4:58 pm #168452hellraiser-89ParticipantI thought Belle traveled to the Asian part of FTL, where Asian stories would come from.
It’s not another world because there was no mention or even hint about using a portal to get there.January 15, 2013 at 5:05 pm #168455PriceofMagicParticipantIt’s interesting that Belle and Phillip can both read and write chinese. Perhaps that is a skill that will come into play later on in the season?
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixJanuary 15, 2013 at 6:51 pm #168470evilqueenParticipantDon’t know, seems like Belle spent her entire life among books and her father probably gave her whatever she wanted so why not a Chinese teacher? 😆
As for Philip, I think this is a result of the curse, in the end he was a Chinese(-like) monster. He might not have been directly transformed into SOME beast but perhaps Maleficent put him in a body of one that once existed, making him inherit its memories and behaviour, completely zoning out Philip’s mind – I wonder if you asked Philip now, as a human, if he could write any Chinese, he would struggle.January 15, 2013 at 8:21 pm #168528winlea78ParticipantI think that the FTL realm has cultures similar to ours. Rumple is obviously Scottish-like. Is sons name is an old English-like name and Belle is supposed to be French as is her father and Sidney is Arabianish (like the words I’m making up?) Not to mention Gipetto is Italian as is His son. So I think that the realm gas cultural counterparts.

I have to disagree with you, the part should not go to whoever has the right ethnicity, the part should go to the better actor.
That’s like saying Canadian should not play american characters or vice versa “I hate it when casting directors lumps all white people together”. Or on greater extent, homosexual actor should only be allowed to play homosexual characters… it’s just not a good logic to use.
Besides, if they only look for actors of chinese descent, they will considerably reduce the pool of potential candidate. After all, they did make Lancelot black… I didn’t hear anyone complaining about that. so what’s the big deal if she is not chinese?
