So we all know that only the dagger can kill the Dark One, who is currently Rumple. The person who kills the Dark One with the dagger then becomes the Dark One. However, what happens if Rumple kills himself with the dagger? Will that completely destroy the Dark One and break the cycle, similar to the how the Elder Wand works in HP? I was also thinking what would happen if Rumple dies of old age and no one kills him with the dagger, but then figured that becoming the Dark One would probably make you immortal.

That would be a reasonable assumption. However, I think it’d be impossible for the Dark One to stab themselves and end it all. If it was possible, then Zozo would have done himself in, because it seemed like he was pretty desperate to be set free, but he still couldn’t do it himself so made Rumple do it for him. The Dark One Curse is like a parasite with an iron grip on its host, and it takes over and refuses to allow the host to expel it.

Very interesting question, but I agree with Phee. I imagine if there’s ever a back story for how Zoso became the Dark One, it would include him trying to kill himself and failing repeatedly, thereby confirming that the Dark One cannot kill himself.

    But awesome question 😀

I’ve been wondering if the power of the Dark One is not a curse at all but is instead — or, at least, was originally meant to be — a solemn duty, and that, when the Dark One can no longer bear the responsibility, he is meant to give the dagger to his trusted successor. Kind of a morbid thought, but it seems in keeping with old-style fairy tales.

Also, I like how this dagger has the Dark One’s name on it. I don’t think any character has used that line yet, but I’m sure it’s coming.

or even Rumple, after all those years without Bae having a low moment and trying to kill himself? It wouldn’t run along with his coward nature but having the Dark One’s powers has changed him a lot.
This low point could be for example that after hundreds of years of trying he finally realises that the only possible way would be to cast this curse but it requires a heart of someone he loved and this is when he lost all his hopes because he thought he wasn’t capable of love to anyone but Bae?

The dark one essence seems to flow from the dark one into the knife then into the person who stabbed the dark one. If the dark one tried to stab himself then the essence is just flowing into the knife then back into the dark one.

All magic comes with a price!

Exactly, Rumple would’ve known that and so it would really be an act of utter desperation if he tried to kill himself, trying to create the paradox.
Like I said, it would be interesting to see this low point in Rumplestiltskin and this could also be the point when he creates his master plan.

RubyPhoenix, I’m sorry that this is completely irrelevant… but does your name have anything to do with Fawkes? :geek:

Haha. Yes. I’m a huge Once and HP fan so I tried to come up with a name related to both fandoms. 😀
