Jane Espensen on Blog Talk Radio – Talking Once Upon A Time
This was fairly cool. No spoilers – she was quite guarded. She made some interesting points about other stories, non fairy tale, that we might see, talking about Black and White world. I actually really like the Dr Frankenstein world, and hope we get to see more of OZ and Wonderland too. Neverland too hopefully. So many possibilities. Maybe even more non Fairytale stuff.
She also discussed the concepts of “happy stories” and “angsty, sad stories”. Basically, if it’s a happy story / relationship, then it’s likely we won’t see much of that, as conflict and angst is where the drama is. Happy happens off screen, and she touched on why give a happy ending in season 1 or 2 when the show will be going for 5, 6 or 7 seasons (hopefully a long time!). Happy is boring. Who knows what the show will be like 5 or 6 years from now, and who will still be on it. They are just going to drag out all this over a long while.
I think this means for the current popular ships like Rumbelle, Swan Thief, Swan Queen, Captain Swan, Aurora/Philip (what is that called anyway? I get confused with all these pairings so I just ignore them mostly) and all the others it may be a long, long time before they happen, if they ever happen, or they may be superseded by other ships made of characters that are not even on the show yet. And current characters may die off or be written out at any time. Unless you’re a core character I suppose – Rumple, Emma, Snow, Charming, Henry, Regina. I honestly can’t see any of them leaving till the very end – they are just too central to all the plot arcs. If you’re not one of those main characters on the show though – watch out. Plot bunnies could see you disappearing at any moment. All other characters would be fair game I think. And you really don’t want to be a new character lately – they all seem to die so quickly LOL. Watch out Mr Outsider!
So in summary, everything happening right now is sorta meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Just sit back, enjoy the ride, and don’t start worrying for about 5 years. 😀

That sounds a bit stupid, not on your part Kiwi but on the writers… Why in the world write meaningless stories ?
Thanks for the link I’m going to listen right now 😀January 22, 2013 at 11:42 pm #169630jasperannParticipantThat isn’t what I got out of the interview. Except for the happy stories thing. I got that they are not going to give us what we want, but what we need. 😆 I am all for angst and drama… happy is boring on TV. Although in real life, I prefer Happy to Angsty. 😉
I was happy to hear the the writers do see a spark between Emma and Hook which means they will have more scenes together. Can’t wait for that to be explored. It also means that when Neal comes back it will not be happily ever after with out some drama. 😀
January 23, 2013 at 5:55 am #169668GrimmsisterParticipantYeah! I didn’t ge the meaningless part either. Angst, drama, cups being smashed is a good thing 😀 Doesn’t mean the end but happy would mean the end acording to Espensen. When Happy happens that’s when we get the “And they lived happily ever after. The end”
Once is just a very looooooooooong fairytale that will go on for 7-10 years. That’s far to long a time to let a show run for, in my opinion. Dragging stories on for that long makes for a lot of fillers, so in that sense- meaningless in the grand sceme of things, still applies, but thats probably not Espensens opinion.
I liked what she said about black and white world, though it was very vague. I didn’t really get it and then I couldn’t scroll back 😡 But there is something inportant to why it’s in black and white and why people going there from other places stay in color.

January 26, 2013 at 6:18 am #170041kiwiParticipantPerhaps meaningless wasn’t the right word. We will all get alot of enjoyment out of it of course. What I was getting at is that the way the series will end will likely bear little relation to what’s going on right now, and probably involve a whole host of different characters when we finally get there – the only exceptions being the main characters. I would think they’ll hang around. That’s actaully a good thing though, otherwise it might stagnate if it’s the same people for year and years LOL. Plus, variation and interesting new characters isn’t a bad thing, if they do it right.
