I realize there are other threads regarding Greg’s phone or Greg’s identity or Greg’s license plate. Seeing as I’m dealing with all 3 topics, I thought I’d make one thread dealing with all 3 clues.
I have a theory that Greg Mendell is the writer of Henry’s book and creator of Storybrooke and all the characters within it.
Clues that support this theory:
1) Greg’s license plate was 2TFL138. George Lucas’ first full feature film was THX1138. The numbers 1138 and 138 are quite often referenced in other Lucas’ films. We see it numerous times in Star Wars movies and in American Graffiti where Milner’s car is THX 138. Many songs by groups like Queen have referenced the movie or title. Same goes for TV series. In the animated cartoon, Pinky and the Brain, in the opening intro, we see the equation THX=1138 on the blackboard.
2) In THX1138, all the characters in this movie were given 7 digit full formal names consisten of 3 letters and 4 numbers. However, they were all called by their first three letters. Main characters were THX, SEN and LUH. When we see HER on Greg’s phone, it is another shout out to the George Lucas movie. Not saying that HER isn’t someone we may know and they don’t want to give it away, just saying that’s it’s another nod to the writer and the movie. We also see a 4 digit numeric code (1670) that Emma enters. Another nod to the 4 numbers 1138.
3) More nods to George Lucas and Sci-Fi. In episode 2×12, In the Name of the Brother, we see Star War references such as Greg’s cell phone ringtone starts playing the Star Wars theme; his charger that Emma plugs into the phone has a huge star on it; and one of the hospital rooms is R2-42 (4th letter of the alpha. is D thus R2-D2). In a live blog, Jane Espenson said to remember that ring tone.
4) Ethan Embry’s 1998 movie, Can’t Hardly Wait, is a teenage cult movie. It propelled many young unknowns to the front lines. Seth Green, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Peter Facinelli to name a few. The story takes place at a high school graduate party somewhere in PENNSYLVANIA. So the plates are a nod to Ethan and his teen cult movie.
5) In Can’t Hardly Wait, we have characters who are called: Watermelon Guy, Stoned Guy, Crying Drunk Girl, Girl Whose Party It Is, Headbanger, Hippie Girl, Yearbook Girl, Reminiscing Guy, etc. Amanda, who is the girl Preston (Ethan) is so enamored with, it often referred to as HER, thus another nod to the name HER.
6) In the movie, we find out that Ethan’s character Preston, is an aspiring writer who ends up leaving to go and join a workshop with true life, American Sci-Fi writer, Kurt Vonnegut. More nods to a Sci-Fi writer.
7) On Greg Mendell’s phone we see many pictures of him dining out along with a picture of a seafood menu, while standing outside the restaurant. He tends to tweet about his dining experiences and travel quite a bit. This leads me to believe that he is making a living writing as a food critic or writing a travelers guide. This is the third clue pointing to him being a writer. We have nods to George Lucas, a Sci-Fi writer; Preston in Can’t Hardly Wait/aspiring writer joining a workshop with Sci-Fi writer Kurt Vonnegut; and Greg in and out of restaurants tweeting about food/restaurants.
8) The name Greg Mendell is a nod to the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel. Genetics meaning creation/heredity/genesis. Is the writer of the Henry’s book not the creator of all fairy tale characters that resided in his version of their stories?
In 2×12, In the Name of the Brother, Greg is quick to deny seeing anything as Emma questions him. He seems uneasy and frightened. He would rather be charged for driving and texting than to admit he saw magic. Later, during his telephone phone to call to HER, he says: “You’re not going to believe what I saw!” I believe that he was frightened and very much on guard. I think they showed us his OMG moment when he realized that 3 characters from a fantasy book he had written, called Once Upon a Time, were actually alive.
When we put everything together, all the nods to Sci-Fi writers and to the father of genetics/creation, we have the writer of Henry’s book.
I’ll even go one step further in suggesting he may also turn out to be Peter Pan based on HER being Wendy or Moira and Greg having seen his nemesis, Captain Hook. That would definitely account for him being so upset at what he saw. So maybe instinct had him plainly run Hook down with his car. Let’s remember his casting call name Barrett and all the clues surrounding that name leading us to Peter Pan as well. The screenplay The Never Never Land by Wilson BARRETT from which J.M. Barrie got the name Neverland; Brent BARRETT currently staring as Hook in the Peter Pan alongside Cathy Rigby.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE that I still haven’t given up on Neal not only being Bae but also Peter Pan. However, I’ve got to be open to other possibilities 😉

Thanks Tiara 😀 I’m open to other theories but had to put this one out there as so many things are screaming he’s a writer.

Both appeared in Storybrooke as a “stranger” right in the middle of the Season. Although, at least we learned Greg’s name right away.
January 28, 2013 at 10:08 pm #170383MyrilParticipantSome impressive research, TheGoldenKey, some interesting ideas. Not quite following all your conclusions though.
Interesting about the plate, possible. Maybe a nod to Lucas.
But, pin numbers for cell phones usually have 4 digits. Don’t see much of a nod there to the number 1138. Just saying.
Doubt that the fact, that Ethan Embry played in a movie an aspiring writer, gives any hint about the character he now plays in Once Upon a Time. Or do you think they cast people because their former work might offer some nice to use hidden clue for fans to discover?
From genetics to conclude Greg might be the creator, writer of Henry’s book is thinking far outside the box in my opinion. But who knows.
The name Greg Mendell does of course look like a broad hint, hard not to think of Gregor Mendel. Johann Gregor Mendel is most known as the father of genetics, true, but he was in his time as well a bee-keeper, studied physics and astronomy, and he was a meteorologist, who kept log of weather patterns for years and analyzed a tornado that hit Brno in 1870. Not that this has to mean anything. Just that if the name has to do anything with Gregor Mendel I think it is more something about science.
The Star Wars references were for sure eye-catching (or more or ear-catching). Could be just a nod, or more. But what a coincidence, that the director of the episode, Milan Cheylov, did as actor voice work for the animated TV series Star Wars: The Droids.
Not saying you’re totally on the wrong path with your research, more acting as advocatus diaboli 😉 Actually I like the idea of Greg being a writer.

This caught my attention, given that I’m on TeamWizardofOz, so I had to google it, (because once we get any theory stuck in our head, we interpret all clues to relate to it 😆 )…
http://tinyurl.com/a5t8stuThe tornado of 13th October 1870 in Brno can be considered as one of the
milestones in the history of documenting tornadoes in the Czech lands. The reason
for this is that it was very well described and analysed by Gregor Mendel (the founder
of genetics and a meteorologist) in his work (Mendel 1871). Recently, this was
discussed and translated from the original German text into English by Munzar
(1998). Mendel’s description of the event itself and his analysis of damage caused by
the tornado (Windhose) could serve as an example of tornado documentation and
damage survey even in most recent years. One of the interesting aspects of this work
was that he devoted special attention to the tornado’s rotation. He witnessed this
himself and stressed the fact of anticyclonic spin (and realized that this was a unique
exception from the “general rule”). Therefore, Mendel’s work can be regarded as the
beginning of the modern era of tornado documentation and research in the Czech
lands.Tornado research…portal to another land research…po-tay-toe….po-tah-toe. 😉

Probably not a legit hint, but Frank OZ was the actor/puppeteer who played Yoda in Star Wars. That MUST be what the Star Wars clues mean! 😆 In all seriousness, Greg being the Wizard of Oz would certainly be a weird twist.
