Does anyone know what Bae is alluding to?
The last time we saw Bae back in Desperate Souls, Rumple hadn’t started dealing yet. Sure, he killed that cart-man, and their maid. But 14-year-old Nealfire wouldn’t have seen his papa punish anyone for deal-breaking yet…
Unless this is referencing someone Bae met after he fell through the portal, and before we see him in Manhattan. If the theories are right, Neal could have seen someone “punished” by Rumple who ended up in Neverland (or Wonderland).
At first I thought he could be talking about Hook. But…Hook didn’t really break a deal. (Hook and Milah were supposed to be left alone in exchange for the bean but Rumple kinda messed that one up himself.)
Any thoughts?
If I had to make any crazy guesses, I would predict the only people to break deals with Rumple would be Cora (it seems they had a huge falling out) or possibly Jefferson (who we know gave up realm jumping due to some tragic reason, and never approached Mr. Gold in Storybrooke — yeah, it’s crazy but there’s still that CLEANER & HATTER sign in Neal’s apartment!).

Another possibility is that between the events of “Desperate Souls” (1×8) and “The Return” (1×19), several months passed. There must’ve been several other incidents in between those episodes of people making deals with Rumple and suffering the consequences. In the “Return” Baelfire said Rumple hurt people all the time and was constantly getting worse.

I guess I just considered the whole “dealing” thing to be something that Rumple adopted after he broke that first deal with Bae. Kinda like he made deals in Bae’s memory, and when people broke them he would take away the thing they loved most/or something precious (so that they would suffer just like he suffered when he lost his son).
February 23, 2013 at 5:05 pm #175103RumplesGirlKeymasterI took this to mean Bae himself. The only deal Rumple has ever broken (Rumple told us in fact that this was the only one) was with Bae. He promised Bae he would leave with him to go to a land without magic but he didn’t.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"February 23, 2013 at 5:11 pm #175104KebParticipantYeah, there was clearly some time that had passed between the two, though not more than a year. Besides, I suspect that Rumple was always inclined to make deals…they just didn’t have any force until he had power to back up his end of it. After all, Bae made a deal with him, knowing that his father would a) be very likely to honor a deal and b) would have a hard time resisting it. It may be a trait that precedes the Dark One powers.
Slight evidence for this: He makes an informal deal with the child Seer: Water for what she knows.
Speculative evidence for this: Perhaps he made a deal to get Milah as his wife. That might explain why she married him but “never loved” him (though she at least behaved in a loving way at first).
Other speculative evidence: Mr. Gold apparently loved deals as much as Rumple, even before Emma showed up. We see plenty of evidence that he was still dealing as Mr. Gold–the deal for Henry with Regina, loans to Moe that must have preceded Emma’s arrival, etc etc. His Mr. Gold identity regained his old limp…like I said, though, this is really speculative. We haven’t seen enough of young Rumple to really conclude that the deal thing preceded the Dark One, but it definitely seems to have become an ingrained trait by the time Bae made his bargain with his father.

February 23, 2013 at 5:16 pm #175105ollliiiviaParticipantI wondered about this too! It’s possible it’s something that will be explained as we learn more about Bae’s life immediately after he went through the portal.
I think he must have been dealing some before Bae left because Bae knew to make a deal with him was the way to get him to give up his magic.
Even if Bae hadn’t seen the Dark One making deals, he’s seen him kill on more than one occasion and had reason to be afraid for Emma.February 23, 2013 at 5:20 pm #175107KebParticipantOh! More evidence that the deal thing -might- precede the DO: Zoso tells Rumple “Looks like you made a deal you didn’t understand. Bet you won’t do that again.” Only he does, at least twice…he agrees to take the Seer’s powers not knowing the torture they represent, and he agrees to Bae’s deal not realizing that it’s even possible. Arguably he knew what would come of signing onto Cinderella’s fake deal (he later said he was where he wanted to be), but the reason Charming knew it would work is that Rumple can’t resist deals. Early DO Rumple certainly couldn’t anymore than late DO Rumple.

February 23, 2013 at 5:32 pm #175110beastwhispererParticipantWith the way that Bae accused Rumple of hurting people all the time, I think it makes sense that he’s seen Rumple already making deals to amass more power. That is probably why their home and possessions are better at this point. When Bae shakes Rumple’s hand and says, “The deal is struck,” he sounds like he could be repeating the process that Rumple used for deals early on. If he’s seen the consequences that Rumple has inflicted on people for breaking deals already, then his screaming at Rumple about Rumple breaking their deal takes on another level of accusation. Not only is Rumple abandoning him, but Rumple is also a hypocrite who punishes people for doing what he himself is about to do.
I’d love to see more flashbacks to flesh this part of the story out. Dylan’s portrayal of young Baelfire is fantastic, and seeing the dynamic of young Bae with Rumple is a great contrast to adult Bae with Rumple. Of course, I love all Bae and Rumple scenes, so I’m unashamedly greedy about wanting more of them.
February 23, 2013 at 5:34 pm #175112naomiParticipantOh, I want more of them too!
Sadly, Dylan is growing like an inch-a-day at this point, so they better make more teen!Bae scenes FAST. 😛

This is probably the most likely scenario imo…always wondered exactly how much time passed between Rumple becoming the Dark one and Bae going through the portal…could have been just a couple of months or he could have been just shy of turning 15…Rumple did at least have time to stop the Ogre Wars.
