I’m not sure this is the right place to add this topic, but I think it has a lot to do with this episode, so here it goes:
Upon watching the 8 minutes preview, I started to think: Is the science Greg and Tamara use the same science Whale/Frankenstein used? Both used much electricity, and both don’t go well with magic, but it didn’t seem accurate the assumption of their science being the same as Whale’s. Could there be a “good science” and “dark science”? If it’s all the same science, then why were there many magical portals between the EF and the World Without Colour? Could Whale be up to something? ❓[adrotate group="5"]April 30, 2013 at 8:39 pm #190129RumplesGirlKeymasterI think that’s a good question and I think many people have wondered the same thing. It would be a shame if they didn’t bring Whale into the picture as he is our resident mad scientist. Otherwise introducing him as Frankie would be a waste.

Science is merely the name we gave to the observation and manipulation of nature’s laws. Its only different when you’re talking about “types” of sciences. Such as biology or physics. I don’t think they could define some good or evil. Frankienstien would lean more towards the biological science, while I really think Greg/Tamara are messing with biochemisty. If that were true (which I doubt this is Once after all 😆 ) then I’m thinking certian metals from here are able to put some kind of stop a person’s ability to produce magic. Which then would probably mean that Regina’s body has to be creating magic itself (or stopping her from getting it elsewhere). I hope that gave some kind of clarity to part of your question. I managed to confuse myself 😆
April 30, 2013 at 9:27 pm #190138KebParticipantWell, Whale’s gonna be in the next ep. I don’t think they’d have him there just for Rumple to almost stomp. And he’s been the key edge to that whole science vs magic thing for most of the season.
Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. My spreadsheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6r8CySCCWd9R0RUNm4xR3RhMEU/view?usp=sharing

I’m glad you said something before I got to…. (also a science person, Neuro/biomech engineering grad) I actually thing they are more Physics and weird engineering because of their weird tools i.e. manipulating the cuff, the tazer, electro-shock therapy… all screams engineering to me.

What concerns me is that when David Anders was tweeting about his appearance in 21, he said it was “all too brief” of a visit to Vancouver, or something along those lines. So I’m thinking that the “kiss my boot” scene may be his only appearance in the ep. And I don’t recall David tweeting anything about being there for the shooting of the finale. It’s a seriously wasted opportunity if they don’t get Viktor involved in this storyline, but I’m not getting my hopes up for it. 😕

In the Greetings From Storybrooke Podcast they mentioned that we can’t really figure out exactly how they’re blocking Regina’s magic until we know exactly how Regina makes magic. Greg said it was messing with every magical bone in her body, but that was likely just a turn of phrase. From what we’ve seen, Regina, like Cora, wasn’t actually an inherently magical being, they just learned magic. But perhaps there has to be something in your DNA for you to even be able to learn it? Or if you use it enough, does it actually become a biological part of you? And how did “The Home Office” gather information to research this and develop gadgets that actually work?

I think it is the flow of electricity that “inhibits” magic. At least that’s how I think the show will eventually explain it. Greg/Tamara had to get that cuff/bracelet around Regina’s wrist, and once she was in range activate it somehow to get a flow of electricity around it.
This flow of electricity has to envelope a person completely; fully surround them (in some way) in order to inhibit magic. (the reason why the bracelet had to be fully clamped around Regina’s wrist.) That would explain why Regina and Gold could use cell phones, drive cars and use computers without it interrupting their magic.

Ya. You ever seen the 2008 movie Jumper? In that movie, a kind of high-voltage lasso was used to inhibit a jumper’s ability to jump – i.e. to teleport instantly through space to anywhere on the planet. I’m kinda thinking that is the direction OUaT is going.
May 1, 2013 at 6:52 am #190316KebParticipantThe more they talk about it in the tweets and podcasts, the more it seems that you do have to be born with some innate magical ability to learn magic in FTL. It doesn’t seem to be something just anyone can learn–but who knows what proportion of FTL people have that “spark”?

May 1, 2013 at 2:18 pm #190350gypsyParticipantWe already had Magic.
The inclusion of Science is no surprise.
They’ve been alluding to Alchemy since Season 1. -
