Beauty and the Beast is absolutely my absolute favorite Disney princess story absolutely!!!! I’ve re-watched it a while back, and there’s just one thing that’s been bugging me:How old was Beast when the Entrantress cursed him?The narrator at the beginning said,”The rose she had offered him was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year.”In the song “Be Our Guest,” one of the lyrics is “Be our guset,be our guest, our command is your request. It’s been ten years since we’ve had anybody here and we’re obsessed!”Soooo…….assuming that the 21st year is his 21st birthday, that means he was 11(ten years before Belle came, and the rose started wilting on his 21st year) when he was cursed?!!!!!!!!!!!!!THat just can’t be……So was the 21st year the 21st year since he was cursed(like he was cursed when he was 19,and the rose would wilt when he turned 40?)!!!?!?!?!And was there other visitors before Belle came?So that would mean that someone came to the castle in the 11th year of Beast’s curse??Can anyone clear this up?

hmm, good question. and you really can’t tell much from those stained glass windows in that opening bit. I assumed, he was like 16 or something. rich, spoiled and mean.

I would say he was 11 when the enchantress cursed him. In Disney films, the princesses and princes always seem to be around their late teens/early 20s.

All magic comes with a price!

Yes, if you do the math, he was only 11! I think that was an oversight on the creators’ part- you also have Chip who is younger than 10. In fact, in the Broadway show, the line “until his 21st year” was changed to “for many years.” If he was only 11, the enchantress comes across as being awfully cruel!

There used to be a website many years ago called Ever Notice in which people would point out all kinds of random amusing things they noticed in Disney films.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite too! Hence the screen name. 🙂 I have nearly the whole thing memorized word for word. Reciting the prologue for that one and for Aladdin was a sort of parlor trick of mine back in college.

Maybe it was also a part of the enchantment that he would not be older in this time. That the time was frozen until the cure years are over. The time for his human body would begin again, so in my opinion he was one day before 21.

😮 😯 That is really horrible when you think about it.

but it adds another level of depth to the movie I never thought about before.

Okay, this still bothers me because he did not look an eleven year old in those stained glass windows.

and the picture he scratched out on himself, was definitely not one of an eleven year old boy.

    after the curse is broken

    here’s the beginning narration too.

okay, if he was nineteen at the time of the curse, which make sense since he’s obviously a grown man in the movie, that would mean that when Belle comes around and breaks the curse, the prince is 30 years old.

I’ll go with Obisgirl on this. That opening narration has always bugged me. He can’t have been a kid but the numbers never added up right either.

I think it was just poorly worded explained. I like the idea that he was 19 or whatever (old enough to be in charge / not have parents that are doing a spectacularly awful job and/or missing and leaving him in charge alone) and then have it be 21 years from that moment and the last visitor was there around 10 years ago but the 21st year is running out now.

It’s never made a ton of sense but glad I’m not the only one bugged by the awful wording! I really think it had to be 21st year of the curse and not 21st year of being alive, it just doesn’t compute any other way if the last time people were there it was 10 years ago!

or he might have aged at all because of the curse, which would make him 19 when it is finally broken.

but yeah, I think was also the 21st year of the curse and not on his 21st birthday.

You get the idea that the curse has been active for 10 years from the line of Be Our Guest where they say it’s been that long since they’ve had a guest. Maybe the curse was only active for a few years (since he was 19 or so) and he was just such a jerk before that that no one had stayed there with them since he was 11.
