The news broke a few hours ago, and according to Wetpaint:

Good news, Once Upon a Time fans! In the wake of the news that our favorite fairy tale adventure has officially been renewed for a third season comes the update from the ABC upfronts that Season 3 will feature 24 episodes — two more than Season 2. Maybe this means we’ll have time to check in with some of our favorite long-lost characters. We’re doubly excited at this announcement because the longer season will be broken up into two uninterrupted 12-episode runs. This is key for such a serialized drama. OUAT saw its rating slip in Season 2, and we hypothesized that it had something to do with the inconsistent scheduling on ABC’s part. OUAT is still doing relatively well — and hopefully its spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, will throw some more viewers OUAT’s way— but we still worry about our show. We want it to be around for seasons to come!
And, though we were semi-teasing about how the extra episodes might give us more time to check in with minor characters left by the wayside, we do think OUAT could benefit from a few more episodes to flesh out the story. Now that there are three important worlds — Storybrooke, the Enchanted Forest, and Neverland — we’re worried that we are going to get narrative whiplash. Hopefully, the OUAT Powers That Be will use the extra episodes to slow down the show’s pace rather than to engage in further plot meandering.

I am cautiously optimistic but I know in the first news about the way ABC is setting up their big shows they said 12 & 12 but that it doesn’t necessarily mean the 2 extra episodes (though goodness knows I want them!)

May 17, 2013 at 12:43 am #194978RumplesGirlKeymasterI think it might go something like this (this is just my thought)
episodes 1-6: finding Henry, learning Neal is alive, Belle dealing with Stroybrooke business, learning about the Home Office
episode 7-12: Hook’s backstory, Mermaids, Belle leaves SB for FTL, defeating the Big Bad (Peter Pan)
episode 13-17: Belle comes to NL with Neal, A new Big Bad emerges (Home Office part 2? Ursula), hints at the next land we visit after NL
episodes 18-24: defeating the Big Bad again, going to a new land

What if after you defeat the first big bad the second big bad builds up like you said through episode 13-17 or whenever but the second big bad wins! 😮 Okay stay with me he wins know one major dies he just wins sort of he succeeds in a world domination plot or spreading darkness into the world or whatever he wants to do and then season 4 will focus and defeating him sort of like Once Upon a Time RESTIANCE and then perhaps depending on how big a bad he was we either continue on the story or we live happily ever after.
Again depend on how big a bad it is. If it is someone like Ursula or Home Office part 2 then perhaps we go on to future seasons if we have a villain like lets say the Devil (Hopefully Chernabog from fantasia) or someone of that caliber and all major dark magic is destroyed then we live happily ever after 😀 . But then I’d be sad 😥
May 17, 2013 at 1:04 am #194987RumplesGirlKeymasterIt would be a change for the heroes to lose against a Big Bad, but eventually it has to happen at least once. They rally in the end, of course, though.

Makes you wonder who would be the perfect bad would be to defeat our hero’s at least once so they can rally of couse. The only bad who’s every really never lost is Rumple and that’s because although he is a bad his goals have never been that evil… ❓ well in retrospect 😕 . Unless of course they go with a story arc idea I’ve had and that is Rumple is succumb by the Darkness of neverland and without Belle is to weak to overcome it. Like he’s sort of posed but he’s not .Because I have been pushing that the last season of this show deals with this Dark One issue . But if not Rumple I do hope our bigger bad is worth that title
May 17, 2013 at 8:44 am #195055MatthewPaulModeratorI’m taking this with a grain of salt until it’s officially clarified. ABC’s comment about the Split Season decision never directly confirmed that Once will have 24 episodes for Season 3.
