I like the theory of Mr. Gold wanting to rid the world of magic. It would make sense. The Dark Curse practically reversed all of the enchantments and cursed creatures of Fairytale land. Everyone who was a supernatural creature or animal in Fairytaleland returned to their human form once the curse took effect.
