I’m still not convinced he’s a whale. They’ll really have to pull something out of their bag for that to work for me. I think he’s Prince Eric from Little Mermaid. Although I loved that movie, it was really the songs, Ariel, and the sea witch that made it great. Prince Eric was not my favorite. I always thought he was too fickle, falling in love with a girl for her voice. It seemed a stupid reason in my tween mind at the time. Still think that way. On the other hand, I always loved Beauty and the Beast, even long before the Disney version. Anyway, Dr. Whale seems to have a wondering eye and that reminds me of Eric.
Okay, I rewatched Pinocchio yesterday and realized that that specific scene is the last of the movie. It’s been years since I actually watched it. I was impressed by how spot on the raft and the whale appears in the show. The whale attacks the raft, then they wash up on shore, Pinocchio is unconscious, Gepetto finds him, and then the Blue Fairy turns him into a real boy. The end. I think they chose that to hasten the story along the point we needed it. No need to tell the whole tale. We just need the ending. I don’t think it had anything to do with showing Monstro to tie to Dr. Whale. And the whale was in Henry’s story. That’s the scene where the story stopped. Even August said that it stopped there because they’re writing the story now, and really, nobody knew the real ending of sending him in the wardrobe.
