4. The Blue Fairy is up to something. (not a theory I readily get behind but I see more of a case building for hidden motives)
I’ve been untrusting of Blue for ages, so this is the theory I subscribe to, (also, as per the thread title, I do take issue with Blue’s wardrobe, but that’s a whole other topic :P).
The spoilery stuff regarding this is really just speculation. We were tossed some very vague hints, and our imaginations sorta ran riot trying to figure it out, but there’s not even any hard evidence to suggest that we’re on the right track. So it doesn’t really give any definite spoilers away to say that some people are now wondering if maybe Bae was actually the threat that Blue was trying to rid FTL of when she gave him the bean, because maybe there was some prophecy about him becoming a powerful evil force in the future, (in other words, Bae is our Anakin, the boy with the prophecy about him, and it all ends up a hot mess). Like I said though, no specific info we’ve been given proves this, the info doesn’t even specifically mention Blue or Bae, it’s just people wildly speculating.
Anyway, I mention that because I think it could play into why she didn’t simply tell Rumple to go jump in a tree, if he hadn’t been the real big bad she’d been concerned with getting rid of after all. Granted, he ended up posing a massive threat to all of FTL, but perhaps at the time, she thought she could manage him, and by the time she conceded that she couldn’t manage him, there was no way they could cooperate with each other.
On a far simpler line of thought, if he hadn’t trusted the bean she gave Bae, then why should she think he’d trust a tree portal even if she hooked him up with one?
There’s also the question of why Rumple didn’t just make a tree portal himself, because surely, over the years, the knowledge of enchanted trees didn’t escape him? I think this suggests that in order to turn an enchanted tree into a portal, there’s some sort of specific fairy magic needed that he simply couldn’t do himself.
