Lately I was thinking about the alchemic symbols we saw in OUAT so far. I’ve already know that the book of spells which Rumple gave Regina and Cora has this symbols. But after I took a closer look on the medaillon I saw that one side has also an alchemic symbol on it.
I. The Book of Spells:
Well, I’ve took a closer look on these symbols and tried to figured out which one are definitely alchemic symbols and marked them. Then I researched on the Internet what all these symbols means:
Well being honest I have no clue if the m the symbols on this page makes any sense. It seemed more like they put them randomly into the book to let it look more mystical and magical. It’s also very common that alchemic symbols were used for medieval spellbooks and grimoires. But like I mentioned before it’s not the only time we saw alchemic symbols on the show.
II. The Wraith’s Medaillon:
I took a little bit time to look closely on the symbol which is on one side of the wraith’s medaillon and reconstructed it:
I’ve researched and found out that it looks like the alchemic symbol for white arsenic.
That makes sense. White arsenic is one of the most popular poisons for killing insects, rats and his enemies. And Rumple used the wraith to get revenge on Regina. Now I’ wonder if there is a connection between the book and the medaillon or if they are both just connected with alchemy in some way. Well it could be that alchemy is just one part/method of witchcraft. Maybe there are other stuff on the show connected with alchemy I miss.
Oh and here are my sources:

The same happened to me once when Cora cast the protection spell ove the Safe Haven. The staff she used reminded me somehow about Merlin. Maybe because he is a powerful sorcerer. I don’t know why.
Well when I’m thinking about alchemy and magic I guess the first connection I would make is Faust, because I know that the historical Faust was actually an alchemist who accidentally blowed himself up and after that the people thought that the devil ripped him apart and took his soul.
But I gues alchemy might be connected with witchraft. Rumple is using very often potion. Now I wonder if he is able to do some kind of alchemy or we might already seen him doing some of it. Maybe I should rewatch the show^^

Did you ever see the BBC show Merlin? I never watched it religiously, but caught eps here and there. In the show, Merlin’s mentor is Gaius, who knows about magic-y stuff, but his actual job is as a physician. It’s all a bit alchemy-ish.
Alchemy is an influential philosophical tradition whose practitioners have, from antiquity, claimed it to be the precursor to profound powers. The defining objectives of alchemy are varied; these include the creation of the fabled philosopher’s stone, the ability to transform base metals into the noble metals, gold or silver; and the elixir of life, which confers youth and longevity. Western alchemy is recognized as a protoscience that contributed to the development of modern chemistry and medicine. Alchemists developed a framework of theory, terminology, experimental process and basic laboratory techniques that are still recognizable today. But alchemy differs from modern science in the inclusion of Hermetic principles and practices related to mythology, magic, religion, and spirituality.

The show already has the science vs magic theme, and alchemy is sort of like a bridge between the two.But I gues alchemy might be connected with witchraft. Rumple is using very often potion. Now I wonder if he is able to do some kind of alchemy or we might already seen him doing some of it.
Rumple turning straw into gold is very much like alchemy. Maybe he took that basic alchemical principal of turning metals into gold, and worked out some magic to tweak it so it worked with straw.

Victor Frankenstein was an alcnemist, which would play nicely with bridging the science/magic theme. -
