Disney is going back to the classic novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame for its newest event series. Disney and ABC are developing a show called Esmeralda, which will look at the story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame through the eyes of the eponymous gypsy, according to Deadline.

The series is being written by Evan Daugherty, whose other credits include Killing Season, Snow White and the Huntsman, the upcoming Divergent, and the hotly-debated upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The success of ABC’s Once Upon a Time may be the impetus for developing more stories based on classic novels and popular fairy tales.

Disney’s original animated The Hunchback of Notre Dame was released in 1996, nearly two decades ago. While the original featured voice work by Demi Moore and Kevin Kline, no casting announcements have yet been made for Esmeralda.

Snow White and the Huntsman was horrible.  That writing credit alone doesn’t give me much faith that this will be good.

Agreed! And actually it makes me really worried for Divergent which is such a great series.

Hunchback was never my favorite. Once I grew up and realized what Frollo was singing about I was like…oh my. It was very risky for Disney and I give them props for that but the story was never my favorite.

Wait a minute, it’s been a long time since I saw the movie, what was Frollo really singing about?

Essentially either Esmerelda has to sleep with him and be his or he will burn her at the stake.

I read “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” by Victor Hugo in school. It was was one of the longest, saddest novels I have ever been required to read. The cartoon version has all but been erased from my mind.

I never saw the cartoon one –now I’m glad about that!
