Something just struck me in rereading some interviews with similar word choice. We’ve heard somebody mention a wizard not once, but twice now in recent interviews, both from Josh and MRJ.
First up Josh (from an Oct 15th interview found here: http://www.buddytv.com/articles/once-upon-a-time/ouat-interview-josh-dallas-on-51536.aspx)
We have heroes, we have villains, we have a pirate, we have a savior, we have a wizard.
Just a few days prior, on Oct 11th, this MRJ interview was released & can be found here: http://www.examiner.com/article/michael-raymond-james-on-neal-s-journey-to-find-his-family-on-once-upon-a-time
I don’t know what the boys have in store but I would be surprised to see Neal turn into a wizard at some point!
As for the MRJ quote I feel like that has to be a typo (my inner editor is saying that it should say/mean “no idea what’s coming but I WOULDN’T be surprised if this thing happens”).
So if MRJ wouldn’t be surprised, it’s just a typo. If he would be surprised (and they were talking about Neal using magic right before that) then it was an interesting comment to have made randomly, jumping from “yeah I’m using magic” to “I’d be shocked if they made him a wizard” though we have no idea what may have been asked that filled in the gaps in between (I really hate interviews sometimes *shakes the writers of them*).
I didn’t think anything of it before when that interview first came out because he had just been talking about Neal using magic but it IS interesting to note that Josh, just 4 days later, mentioned that they have a wizard in their midst. Technically that could have referred to Rumple but then who else is a villain (it was plural)? We know now that Neal is on the island with Rumple which leaves us an extra spot to fill after taking the JR6+Neal and fitting it into those categories which leaves us with….*drum roll*
- Heroes (plural) – Snow, Charming
- Villains (plural) – Regina, Rumple
- Pirate – Hook
- Savior – Emma
- WIZARD – Neal
The only way this is entirely crackpot is if somebody else joins them because even though Tink is with them right now, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be considered a “wizard” and I’m not entirely sure she will stay with the group / which side she’s actually on. Regardless of which category she might into of the plural options above, be it hero OR villain, I still don’t see them calling her a wizard, especially with her lack of powers from being a fairy and the fact that she’s female.
SO – could Neal be on his way to becoming a wizard? Or do you think he’ll be added to one of the existing categories and we’ll meet someone new along the way?
Josh USED to mention heroes, villains, pirate, savior…but more recently he’s been using wizard and MRJ used that as well (and I swear he must have meant that he wouldn’t be surprised if Neal became a wizard after using magic because that just does not make sense to me any other way within that context.)

October 19, 2013 at 2:23 am #217059PheeParticipantThey’ve been using “wizard” to promote Rumple this season. Think it’s been used in a couple different promos, but here’s one of them…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0DlRlX8SlsA Princess
A Pirate
A Wizard
A Queen
A Knight
A SaviourJosh has regurgitated it in pretty much every interview, (some others have said it too, but I swear it seems like he says it in every interview, and God love him I reached the point where it made me wanna slap him :-P).
October 19, 2013 at 2:32 am #217060MysteryKat25ParticipantI forgot about that promo, I always thought it was weird how they suddenly called him a wizard even though we’ve watched him do magic so didn’t think much of it. Based on the way Josh worded it, Rumple could fit both categories I guess.
I just found it interesting that both he and MRJ used the word wizard, especially since we’re starting to see Neal actually use magic. I’m still convinced that was a typo in MRJ’s interview but it’s still interesting that he mentioned the possibility of Neal maybe becoming one (even if he may have said he’d be surprised by it but that sentence structure leaves a lot to be desired UNLESS he was specifically asked “Do you think he would embrace magic to the point of becoming a wizard like his father?” which would also be weird but at least we’d have the context to go off of instead of just the random quote. )

There have a been a few speculations around here that Neal might have some magic in him. I think he may have picked up a trick or two from Papa though I’m not sure we can classify him as magical, a la Emma.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 19, 2013 at 1:49 pm #217152MysteryKat25ParticipantI think based on what we’ve been shown that many have the ability to do magic they may just not realize it (a la Cora) and have tapped into it yet. Neal was able to make the stick work with blood magic, and the globe so he might be able to do down the line too.
I guess Josh *may* have combined the different ways that they’ve been listing them all. He had been saying heroes, villains, pirate, savior for so long I had completely forgotten about the promo that classified them each individually so I thought it was strange not only he but MRJ had mentioned specifically a wizard.
Yes that grammar did not make any sense to me, still hoping for a typo. Either that or he had a momentary slip of the tongue and just didn’t say it right which is entirely possible as well. I still think he meant to say (or they meant to write) that he wouldn’t be surprised just because he’s not the one writing the show. Either way it was a fun idea for a little bit and we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

October 20, 2013 at 6:59 am #217276smallwhitebutterflyParticipantooh this is an interesting thread, I noticed they had started saying ‘wizard’ alot. MRJ also used the word on twitter when talking about the #AskMRJ. I think he said something like “what am I, a Wizard?”
A crack-theory of mine was always that Bae was the wizard of Oz because of the Oz references in 1×08 Desparate Souls and 1×19 The Return, but the Bae-is-Peter thing got so much hype that I never bothered to mention it. Also MRJ looks sooo HOT in a 3-piece suit!!!!
He probably isn’t the actual Wizard, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he has been to Oz at some point.

First off, yeah he does!! He looks great in a 3piece.
Second, your theory is not that cracky. I remember back when Nealfire Pan was a viable thing, we speculated that he may have traveled between worlds and Oz was one of them. Not sure how it works out Timeline wise now, but it would be cool if he had some sort of connection.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 21, 2013 at 1:35 am #217621thebassgalParticipantMaybe he escaped Neverland to Oz… is it canon that he went from Neverland to the real world? Maybe Oz is a land without time like ours as well since it’s magical and full of wizards, rainbow kisses and unicorn stickers.

Neal did say he went to others land before he came here. But this was before we knew he’d been to Neverland. Also, Dorothy was in Oz for atleast a few days but when shed gotten home it’d been like what, a few hours? In the movie that is. In the books, I think Oz works on the same time as us. But I’m sure Bar has been to many worlds, he said he ran from Rumple for a long time
