I think that the mermaids can become human whenever they leave the water (a la “Splash”), but for some reason, Ariel thinks she can only venture out once a year (maybe that is what she was taught to believe).

–This scene takes places BEFORE Ariel saves Snow. Ariel only thinks she can become human once a year but that was a lie perpetrated by her father (very fitting of Triton)
–She becomes human when she is “allowed” and goes ashore and sees Eric for the first time. She falls madly in love with him but thinks that they will never be together because she is a mermaid and must return to the sea.
–She prays to Ursula whom she thinks is a myth. But Regina has been watching all this and decides to impersonate Ursula. She tells Ariel that she will make her human forever if she kills Snow White
–Ariel ends up saving Snow White at the displeasure of Ursula. Snow, in return, agrees to help Ariel and Eric reunite.
–Regina is very angry by all this and casts Ariel into Neverland, separating her from Eric.
