The magical connection between Regina and Emma added another dimension last night.
Regina lessons in pyrokinesis paid off handsomely in the Dark Hollow. Interesting isn’t it that when faced with the prospect of Hook and Neal both being destroyed Emma invents a third option i.e. lighting the candle with magic. I suspect this incident will foreshadow bigger decisions in the future.
The way that the two women have used magic together remains consistent Regina initiates the magical act and Emma tips the scales. Is this solely because she is the less experienced of the two or and this is my theory Regina’s true strength is being held back by the Darkness and her own self-doubt. Those lines of Rumples from We Are Both and Miller’s Daughter keep churning in my mind. “She is quite important” “So powerful, you could do so much if you’d just let yourself.”
Thoughts…

I’m interested whether there’ll be any adverse affect on Emma because she’s been learning from Regina, and using her method of summoning anger. When Rumple was coaching Emma in putting up the barrier spell around his shop last season, he told her to tap into the love, and to think of the people she wanted to protect. He recognised that Emma’s magic comes from a different place than Regina’s (and Cora’s, and his own). But Regina doesn’t know how to do it any other way, so will being coached by the dark side to use dark methods ultimately tarnish or corrupt Emma in any way? Or is her magic so powerfully positive that it really won’t matter in the long run?

Rumple was also under duress at the time so there is the slight possibility he may have had a lapse in his judgment.
When it comes to the two halves of the same coin argument, I agree that that is the symbolic representation being made. My instincts tell me that there is more to Regina’s magic and her destiny than just being the repository of dark magic. I suspect that her true powers are much more significant, not unlike Anakin Skywalker whose Force abilities were tremendous when oriented towards the Light Side when Anakin fell the Dark Side he sacrificed a large part of his humanity and as a result his powers were circumscribed.
I noted in an earlier posting Regina’s association with Unicorns, now from mythology we know them as beings of great power and love, one need only reference Ridley Scott’s Legend. I find it interesting that in the scene between Rumple and Regina when he commands her to pull out the Unicorn’s heart she refuses and likewise refuses to crush that heart. If the Unicorn is a metaphor for Regina. Then symbolically it would mean she would be ripping out her own heart and crushing it. I mention this because after Rumple withdrew the heart from the Unicorn he proclaimed: “Now it belongs to me.” i.e., Regina and all her powers belong to him. Rumple’s deliberate sabotage of Regina’s life feels to me that Rumple knows that Regina is naturally magical and were her powers directed towards good she “could do so much” as he says. Throughout the series Regina has sought to fight back against the darkness that overwhelms her and those efforts that include attempting to adopt Hansel and Gretel for example backfire due to the malevolent way she goes about them. I suspect that we’ll see the importance of redeeming Regina ramp up as this season progresses. A redeemed Regina’s powers combined with Emma’s I think is how they’ll get the happy endings back.
