I loved how Neal pointed out his own biggest roadblock when it comes to Emma. When Rumple was let out of the box and told Neal that he was afraid that he was going to end up being just like his own father, Neal interrupts him and points out that he is nothing like Pan because Rumple came back for him. Therefore Neal acknowledges that what makes the difference in showing someone that you love them is not that you made a mistake and let them go but that you did everything you could to go back to get them. So he just verbally acknowledged the difference between himself and Killian when it comes to Emma. They both made decisions to leave her. It took Killian about 10 seconds after leaving SB to recognize that he had made a huge mistake so he turned around and went back for her – he had absolutely NOTHING to gain by going back. Henry isn’t his child so he wasn’t personally invested in saving him, he went back for ONLY one reason – for Emma. Then we have Neal who also left Emma but who did NOT go back for her. He didn’t go back for her when she was a teenager and he didn’t go back for her when Rumple tracked him down – he stayed engaged to Tamara. And while he had talked about loving her, he has never done anything about it the way he pointed out that Rumple did something about proving that he loved him. Everything he has been doing in NL he has been doing to save Henry. So I find it interesting that even Neal has verbally acknowledged that NOT going back for someone is what makes a relationship a deal breaker. Compare how Rumple has “fought” to get back to Bae for all of those years to Neal saying he will never stop fighting for Emma. I am even more confused by his saying that to her now that he recognizes that his own father came back for him.
