Here’s my theory:
there are two types of magic, one is produced through emotions and one is produced through fairy/pixy dust.
When Rumpel was little he wasn’t The Dark One, but I am sure he was always a bit magical. I wouldn’t be surprised if he spun straw into gold long before he became the dark one. maybe he just kept it secret because the weird women who raised him got scared of that ability and warned him not to show it off. (I mean, otherwise why was he not rich before becoming Dark One if he “could spin for kings and queens”?)
I also think that his father was mostly with no emotion at all, but rather like these parasites who probably lived off Rumpel’s mother and gambled everything away. he would come home every once in a while to his wife and child only because he needed food and more money (and maybe to play with his son – which was fun for him to do as long as he needn’t be responsible for him because the mother was there) Rumple’s mother could have died not long before this PP incident, which is why Rumple was still hanging around with his father. when he gave him that doll and told him to name it “because a name makes it real” who knows? Rumple might have fueled that magic in his father who himself had no emotions by simply naming that doll.
later on he became the dark one and that was the kind of magic that is maybe different from pixy/fairy dust but magnifies emotional magic or something. the thing about The Dark One’s magic is that it’s power that can be controlled by anyone -magical or not – who holds the dagger. so emotions would have nothing to do with it. BUT
Rumple owned the dagger so his emotional magic had everything to do with it. so every time he got angry he would turn into a monster because the DO curse would take over completely. (remember Belle tells him “you didn’t ever COMPLETELY become him, there is still hope” in episode 2 I think) anger was probably his most dangerous emotion so maybe he tried not to get angry, BUT
he needed anger to accomplish some magic that needed to be done, and so he got Regina to do it for him. this way she would be able to get the magic done and not succumb to the curse and become to The Dark One.
obviously she could be redeemed. if he succumbed to his anger he would never be able to be redeemed because DO would become him.[adrotate group="5"]December 4, 2013 at 3:10 pm #227979PriceofMagicParticipantI disagree.
All magic comes with a price!

While there is a theory that there are certain people to which magic is naturally drawn, I’m not sure little Rumple was himself magical. I really doubt that he spun straw into gold before becoming the Dark One. He would have used this gift to give him and his father a better life, instead of using the bean to go to NL.

Strictly speaking, that’s not Belle. That’s Vision!Belle who was a manifestation of Rumple’s conscientious, in other words something he wanted to believe about himself but put into the mouth of the person he loves most.
BUT he needed anger to accomplish some magic that needed to be done, and so he got Regina to do it for him. this way she would be able to get the magic done and not succumb to the curse and become to The Dark One. obviously she could be redeemed. if he succumbed to his anger he would never be able to be redeemed because DO would become him.
Rumple was unable to cast the curse because he didn’t have the heart of the thing he loved most, Baelfire. The curse was to find the thing he loved most. That’s one of the (many) reasons he sent Belle away. If Belle was there he’d eventually probably have to sacrifice her OR he’d give up the search for Bae like he almost did with Rumple.
His goal with Regina, yes was to have her give into her inner darkness, but not because he couldn’t give into it himself.

oh? ok.
December 5, 2013 at 10:13 pm #228331once_dudeParticipantAlthough I like this theory I don’t think we will get any more explanation than we already have because that would be disclosing the rules which these writers are often reluctant to do. However I have a question that has to tie into your theory: What about Zoso, I want to learn about him I don’t want him to be a throwaway character just to get Rumple further into his destiny. I know its incredibly unlikely that we will ever see his actor but a fan can dream.
Magic always comes with a price, so I pay with visa.
