Emma’s wardrobe does tell us a story:
1. When Neal and Emma met she was wearing plaid and he was wearing a red leather jacket.
2. Emma tends to wear black coats when she is insync with Hook.
3. She wears her red leather when she’s working primarily as the “savior.”
4. In the new photos Emma is wearing plaid pants and a red wool coat–a kind of softer “mom” version of herself.
5. She’s back in the red leather coat when she, Hook and, Henry leave for Storybrooke. Presumably to “save” everyone.
6. She wearing a lady “pirate” black leather coat with buckles in 3.13 or 3.14– again with Hook.
Is this true I never noticed
[adrotate group="5"]December 17, 2013 at 2:02 pm #231762RumplesGirlKeymasterClothing in TV always tells a story. It ties people to their surroundings, it ties them to other characters, or conversely it sets them apart from others in an effort to make them “stick out.”
ONCE doesn’t use this as much as–say–“Mad Men” does (about which essay upon essay could be written) but it does use clothing to tell thematic stories.
I can’t speak for all your bullet points, but I can address a few
3. She wears her red leather when she’s working primarily as the “savior.”
Both yes and no. The red jacket is, to quote JMo herself, “Emma’s armor.” It’s her protective shield against the world because Emma is a total “walls up” kind of girl. This a layer of clothing that keeps her isolated and protected from the big bad world that has hurt her so often. So for example, in 310, we see Emma contemplating what is wrong with Henry while she sits at the beach where his castle used to be. She’s worried about her son, worried about why he hasn’t called (hence playing with her phone), and worried about the Savior not being able to “take a day off.” It’s the first time in the whole of S3 that we’ve seen the red jacket come back. Because right then, Emma needs the comfort of her walls.
4. In the new photos Emma is wearing plaid pants and a red wool coat–a kind of softer “mom” version of herself.
When those pics of Emma wearing those *hideous* pants came out everyone said, “what on earth!! Emma Swan would never wear those!” And now we know why. She’s not the Emma Swan we know. She’s a different Emma Swan. She’s going to wear things and do things and say things that OUR Emma Swan wouldn’t do. That’s the price of her cursed self.
5. She’s back in the red leather coat when she, Hook and, Henry leave for Storybrooke. Presumably to “save” everyone.
Most likely yes. She’s OUR Emma again by that point. Which means all the pain of being away from her family has just come back, her walls are going up, she has to be tough as nails Emma Swan with her protective armor again. So out comes the red leather jacket.

I never linked it because it seemed overly shippy to me too, just like these observations. I’ve also seen some people who draw comparison to Regina’s clothing–but how much is intentional versus unintentional or just done for a different purpose than the ones fans might prefer?
The writers have said that Emma in a tank top is “action” oriented. The actress said her jacket is like armor. Sometimes she’s just cold! I do think they use colors at times, obviously to represent a mood or a stance, so there are times we can draw conclusions of some kind.
For instance, the shoelace on Emma’s wrist the actress said is a memorial to Graham, and the writers confirmed it. Personally my favorite of her wardrobe for comedy is the cloche hat she and Snow wore–mommy and me day!

Good question. Storyteller had a great thread about some of the clothing pieces Regina wears and interestingly enough some of those choices do tie back to Emma. Like the fact that Regina wears a lot of dreamcatcher jewelry and we associate dreamcatcher with Emma and SwanFire. Adam once had a conversation with people on Twitter about how it was intentional between Regina and Emma with the dreamcatcher as a theme instead of spoilers for plot.
Sometimes she’s just cold!
lol, yes. In 308 Emma started sporting a black sweater instead of the tank top and that had a lot to do with the fact that it was freezing in the studio. Sometimes clothing reflects real world issues and TV ones. 🙂

Right. Look at Snow White in FTL of the past. Before she is exiled out of her kingdom, her clothes are the whitest white you can get. A representation of her purity and goodness but also naivete, she doesn’t realize Regina has killed her father and is plotting to kill her. When she’s a Bandit, her clothes becomes more earthy creams and tans because she is no longer “snow white.” And then she becomes Military Snow and her clothes are more uniform-esque.
For instance, the shoelace on Emma’s wrist the actress said is a memorial to Graham, and the writers confirmed it.
Not only is it a nod, but it’s something JMO came up with herself. She decided Emma would wear Graham’s shoelaces because Emma is very sentimental person. Over her life she has kept trinkets from various people, despite how she has treated them or have they have treated her. She kept her baby blanket from Snow, even though she thought her parents abandoned her. She kept the keychain/pendant and the car from Neal, despite what happened. She kept Graham’s shoelaces even though he died. She kept the scarf from Hook. Girl is an emotional magpie.
