It’s been over two months since we watched Emma and Henry drive away as Storybrooke disappeared in a cloud of purple magic in the midseason finale of Once Upon a Time.
While there are still 13 days before the series returns, we were lucky enough to receive an advanced screener of the premiere from ABC so we’re here to give fans some scoop on what they have to look forward to on March 9.
Right off the bat, we loved the episode, “New York City Serenade.” It’s fast-paced and fills in a lot of details that we were curious about once we saw Hook on Emma’s doorstep one year after Regina undid the curse.
The episode has some lovely parallels to the pilot episode of the series and there are quite a few things (moments, interactions) that give a nod to the show’s history. There are also some great role reversals thanks to memory gaps that serve as an enjoyable way to give fans information as to just how different things are without the curse.
Obviously we can’t give too much away because that takes the fun out of it (and we don’t want ABC to put a curse on us), but here’s what we can share about the premiere:
1. Aurora and Prince Phillip welcome the group back to the Enchanted Forest and catch them up on some of the happenings there. But they leave something major out for a valid reason.2. Neal and Belle each have a plan when it comes to getting Rumpel back. They also each get to have a reunion in the episode (Bonus Swan Fire Shipper Scoop: A choice Neal makes is also a throwback to a previous episode of the series as is something Emma sees).
3. Hook is relentless in his efforts to make Emma remember and she is not amused, but her curiosity gets the best of her – twice (Bonus Captain Swan Shipper Scoop: Something you’ve been wanting happens and you will flail over it. Also, all of their scenes will make you smile. All of them).
4. Snow helps Regina through an emotional moment and it’s touching to see how far they’ve come. [Bonus Outlaw Queen Shipper Scoop: If you weren’t already shipping these two, their first meeting will make you want to start. It’s flawless).
5. Speaking of Regina, murder remains her go-to solution for any problem that she comes across. Alternate suggestions are made by and . Will Regina listen or go back to her Evil Queen ways?
6. Storybrooke is back, but the how and the why are not immediately answered. Instead, we’re left with a mystery that will have viewers craving more episodes (Bonus non-shipper scoop: Out of all the throwbacks to the pilot, our favorite is a moment that takes place in Storybrooke).
7. Flying monkeys are absolutely terrifying. As for the Wicked Witch…we don’t learn a lot about her in the episode, but what we see? Perfection.
Bonus Dialogue Teases:
“Emma Swan always gets her man.”
“I know you better than you know yourself.”
“Stop looking for things to be wrong.”

"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"February 24, 2014 at 1:36 pm #247394RumplesGirlKeymasterCan I please just clap my hands at how the flying monkeys are terrifying?!
I was super worried that ONCE would make then so CGI that they’d be laughable. But everyone seems to think otherwise.

Will Regina listen or go back to her Evil Queen ways?
spoiler-Snow and spoiler-? . I dont know what to hope for here, since I love Reginas evilness. But also want to see her have some more “good” moments :/
6. Storybrooke is back, but the how and the why are not immediately answered. Instead, we’re left with a mystery that will have viewers craving more episodes (Bonus non-shipper scoop: Out of all the throwbacks to the pilot, our favorite is a moment that takes place in Storybrooke).

I hear all of these being said about or to Emma
February 24, 2014 at 2:13 pm #247408betsypaige24ParticipantOoh, they each have a plan? Interesting………How will they work this out? I really want Belle to make her way to the Dark Castle……I’ll bet her reunion is with Phillip!
I tweeted the woman who wrote the article. I can’t seem to post them, but in essence she said that if we’re a fan of Belle/Neal, we’ll love their scenes..and she said to remember that Belle is strong
February 24, 2014 at 2:35 pm #247423RumplesGirlKeymasterpossibly that he gives up on her when Things are hard??
TVLine said that the Charmings tell him to do that because they want Emma to have a shot at a happy ending away from the madness that is their lives. The last time they saw Emma before Regina cast the curse, she was bemoaning how the price of being the Savior is never getting a day off. They–essentially–want her to have a day off.
he twice thing… wasnt there a spoiler saying she was given two options that she couldnt refuse?
Yeah but I thought one was about the proposal and the other was going to Neal’s place after Hook gives her the address.
I’ll bet her reunion is with Phillip
That’d be nice

And then everyone would know what a hero Belle is!
February 24, 2014 at 6:05 pm #247492RumplesGirlKeymasterBelle’s reunion could also be with RH–whom she freed from the DC. So everyone would see how kind and heroic she was in that situation too!

I could see Neal and Belle reuniting with Philip…but I sort of think it’s ROBIN HOOD. Both Neal and Belle had some important interactions with RH before.
"That’s how you know you’ve really got a home. When you leave it, there’s this feeling that you can’t shake. You just miss it." Neal Cassidy

Could this be referencing Henry not getting his memories back as quickly as Emma does? I wouldn’t think that anyone else having any memory loss would cause a role reversal, because even if they lose their FTL memories once they’re back in SB, their relationships will just revert to what they were before, which is nothing we haven’t seen before. But Emma having to convince Henry of why they’re leaving NYC, that would be a memory loss related role reversal for sure.
I am SO EXCITED for Belle/Baelfire interaction
Yes! This should be awesome.
Can I please just clap my hands at how the flying monkeys are terrifying?!
I was super worried that ONCE would make then so CGI that they’d be laughable. But everyone seems to think otherwise.
I’ve always felt like they put more time, effort and cash into creating the CGI creatures, as opposed to the scenery and interiors, so I was thinking the monkeys would probably look pretty good, but yes, I love seeing such positive comments about them to confirm that they’re gonna be really well done.

Him having left her back in the day is likely what the call back will be in relation to. And I think even if Neal considers what they say, (because 1: he really doesn’t want to upset Emma’s (and Henry’s) happy life and 2: he knows that Snowing want Emma to be happy as well, so her parents’ opinion is worth something), ultimately he’ll decide that nope, he really does need to find a way back to her, because the last time he didn’t find a way back to her he regretted it every moment in a major way and he’s not making that mistake again.
