Based on this past Sunday’s episode we know with certainty that Zelena was a student of Rumple’s In addition, Zelena’s major chip on her shoulder is that she didn’t get the opportunity to enact the Dark Curse. This raises the question of how and why Rumple pursued Regina as his curse-caster when his initial contract with Cora specified her first-born daughter as his payment. The events of Miller’s Daughter seem to point to Rumple being unaware of Zelena’s existence. Its worth reminding everyone that the Seer told Rumple in Manhattan: “The future is a puzzle with many pieces to be sorted. In time you will learn to separate what can be from what will be.” (pesky details aside)
Premise: Rumple foresaw that he needed Cora’s firstborn to cast his curse. He assumed that Regina was that child and pursued her as his curse-casting pawn. As such he expected that he would find Regina a wiling participant in his scheme given her mother and grandfather’s personalities. This explains his initial shock when he discovered her to be a pure and loving being and thus began his manipulations of her aimed at turning her into his monster. Regina’s failure to completely break from her natural loving self (as evidenced by Regina’s continual hope to find happiness despite the Darkness) in my opinion plants a certain degree of doubt in Rumple’s mind about having her cast his curse.
This raises the question of why Zelena believes she was passed over for casting it and if Rumple ever knew her to be Cora’s firstborn and thus the prime candidate to cast it. In order to tackle that question we must begin with the premise that Rumple foresaw a “what could be” situation instead of a “what will be” and as time went on he came to realize he’d made the wrong choice but was in too deep to turn back.
Supposition: That Rumple connects with the Witch as he searches for a way to reach Bae, Now, we know form his conversation with the Blue Fairy and the Seer that he knows it to be a curse that will bring him to his son. But we have good evidence that Rumple searched for other methods as well (the bean he acquired from Smee and Hook and his inquiry into the slippers he had sent Jefferson to Oz to acquire). It was perhaps in pursuit of those slippers that he came to know the Witch at first. Her training in the dark arts from him perhaps came as part of a deal he had with her (perhaps contingent on her providing him with the slippers?)?
Summation: Rumple corrupted Regina not because it was her fate but because his foresight failed him. As a result Zelena feels used by Rumple and intends to show him up by casting the Dark Curse Part Deux to prevent her half-sister from fulfilling her true destiny which is to have all her dreams come true while Zelena’s is to suffer a fate worse than death.

I do think his foresight failed him but then eventually gave him what he need.
The theory I’m currently working is that he chose Regina because she *was* the one that was supposed to enact the Curse due to the fact that she was more loving and hopeful from the start. He needed someone who was high up in order to have them fall harder. Zelena was lamenting her life in Oz, as if it was never good. She was never pure of heart, unlike Regina who started out in life as a good daughter and woman with a good heart. So if we’re timelining:
–Cora has Zelena a few years before the events of the Miller’s Daughter and either the baby is taken or she gives the baby up
–The Miller’s Daughter happens and Regina is born
–Rumple realizes he cannot have Regina and he despairs of ever casting the Curse and his gift kicks in showing him another child–a little girl in Oz who is Cora’s actual first born
–Rumple travels to Oz where he spends a few years teaching Zelena magic and trying to encourage the darkness in her. The problem is that the darkness is already there–Zelena is far more like Cora than Regina is. Because Zelena is already eager to practice the dark arts, she doesn’t have as far to fall and (I think) may have less a chance at being redeemed. I think this worries Rumple–that he may not be able to control Zelena in the end.
–His gift kicks in one more time showing him that Regina *is* the girl he needs but that he must let Cora do what she is going to do in order to get Regina started down the Dark Path, then he can intervene.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 18, 2014 at 12:22 am #253830Marty McFlyParticipantRumpelstiltskin taught Zelena, but saw that she was wicked and wanted power just like her mother so he thought she might be too dangerous to teach magic lest she end up like Cora and never be redeemed. or maybe he saw that she is too evil to ever be redeemed…?
so he went to Regina, he chose her because he saw she was a kind hearted girl EVEN though her mother had no heart… so he decided to use HER to cast his curse instead of Zelena. so this way he thought he could change fate. change the fact that Zelena was fated to cast a curse and take that curse that was ANYWAY fated to happen and have someone kindhearted llike Regina cast it so that she would be able to break it. as someone who has USED the scroll already, she DOES have that power…
so he created a savior – Emma, and he created a curse breaker – Regina.
he later did everything in his power to bring Regina Back to the kindhearted woman she used to be. he gave her a child to adopt (and he knew better than anyone how much the love for a child brings out the best in a person who is really good inside) he gave her countless opportunities to save Emma, Snow, Henry all the residents of storybrooke etc. because he wanted to have her redeemedMarch 18, 2014 at 12:30 am #253831PheeParticipantMy current thinking on how it all played out…
Rumple knew he needed Cora’s child to cast the Curse. He assumed when he met her that she had never had a child, so he assumed that the next child she had would be her first, which is why he worded the deal to be for her first born.
Some time after Regina’s birth, when Rumple was still loitering in Cora’s life, she let it slip that she had in fact had another daughter a couple of years before Rumple first met her, (perhaps she revealed this to divert Rumple’s attentions away from Regina). Because Rumple had the “first born” assumption in his head, (gotta be careful of those assumptions, especially when you’re dealing with tricksy prophecy), he turned his attentions to finding this previous child.
I don’t think Zelena ended up in Oz until later in life, after turning green, which happened towards the end of her association with Rumple. I think she actually grew up in FTL, which is where Rumple found her, and began to train her, thinking she was the one intended to cast his Curse.
Zelena is interesting in that it sounds like she may have grown up similarly to Emma. Given away as a baby, growing up alone and feeling unwanted and unloved, but the situation has affected them both in different ways.
This is where my thinking splits in two and I can’t decide which idea I prefer. Option 1: Zelena’s life had made her so bitter that she actually had no one she loved unconditionally. If so, then she simply wouldn’t be able to cast Rumple’s Curse, because in order for that to happen, the caster had to sacrifice the heart of the thing they loved most, which simply didn’t exist for her. Option 2: Zelena did find someone to love, (I kinda like the crack theory that it was the Huntsman, based on A&E having said that they had a role for him in mind this season and it’d be something obvious after we’d seen the whole season), but because they were the only person in her entire life she’d ever had affection for, it became apparent that there was no way she’d kill that person in order to cast the Curse.
Either option would deem Zelena useless for Rumple’s needs, at which point he turned his attentions back to Regina, now believing that she was the one from the prophecy after all. She had unconditional love in her life with her father, but also had the potential for darkness because of what Cora did to Daniel. She was prime Curse caster material, unlike Zelena.
After being dumped by Rumple, in favour of her precious sister who got the nice life she’d missed out on, and now she was gonna get the magic and the Curse as well, Zelena became unbearably envious. I can imagine a scene where Rumple quips, “That much green doesn’t suit anyone, Dearie,” and whether it’s something he actually does to teach her a lesson, or whether her magically ability just made her naturally susceptible, the excess of envy caused her to actually end up green.
And she was such a nuisance, and Rumple was worried that she might try to contact Regina and/or Cora and screw up his entire Curse plan, that he *poofed* her off to Oz, (wouldn’t be the last time he’d get a Mills woman banished to another world to get her out of the way of his goal).
March 18, 2014 at 12:45 am #253834SlurpeezParticipantMy current thinking is that the reason Rumple couldn’t use Zelena to cast the curse is precisely because she is Cora’s firstborn. Maybe she is protected by Cora’s bid to outmaneuver Rumple’s original contract. Yet, maybe there is still some loophole whereby Rumple could mould the second-born child as his protege to be the one to cast the dark curse.

March 18, 2014 at 1:23 am #253846WickedRegalParticipantJust to convince myself that Rumple didn’t just screw over both Cora’s daughters because of how she broke things off with him…I came up with this theory!
– The Wizard Oscar met Cora in Pre-Miller Daughter days…and is her apparent true love. The two have an affair as Oscar promises Cora many things, but neglects to tell her that he has no true power.
-Cora discovers Oscar is a fraud, and becomes heartbroken. This first begins her doubt of love as it was her true love who broke her heart. A heartbroken Cora tells Oscar to leave, thus he leaves for Oz not knowing that Cora had fallen pregnant.
– Cora gives birth to Zelena, and abandons her in a nearby village where she spends her childhood.
-Nine months after Zelena’s birth…the Miller’s Daughter’s Events happen.
– Due to Cora not allowing Rumple anywhere near Regina…Rumple waited until he could convince Regina to send her mother away.
-While Rumple waited for Cora to smother Regina…he came across young poor Zelena, who pleads with him to teach her magic so she can have a better life. Rumple teaches teenage Zelena while he awaits for teenage Regina to nearly snap due to Cora’s smothering.
-The time finally comes that Regina summons Rumple who jumps at the chance to start training Regina, who he knew exactly to be his caster. Thus he abandons Zelena who becomes so filled with rage that she tries anything to gain his attention, thus messing up a spell that makes her envy known with green skin, and lands her in Oz.
-Rumple trains Regina in the dark arts, and manipulates her life at every turn to create his monster. Not knowing that his choosing of Regina led to a heartbroken Zelena who is constantly judged in Oz for her green skin…they see it as her blaspheming the Emerald City when she has no control of it.
-During the course of The Doctor through Quite A Common Fairy…Regina is fighting the darkness with the little light left in her heart…unaware that her sister is doing the same in Oz. Zelena meets and falls in love with a man(the scarecrow or the tinman) who inadvertently betrays her for Glinda the Good. (Theory: WWE helps turn Zelena wicked)
-Therefore when Regina runs away from Robin Hood….Zelena is heartbroken by her lover…thus both sisters have accepted their darkness at the same time thus creating the Evil Queen and the Wicked Witch of the West…

Other Theories:
-Zelena learned about her mother and sister through either The Wizard, her bio father or Rumple
– The reason The Wizard wanted Zelena dead was because she needed his heart for her recast of the Dark Curse
EVIDENCE: TV FANATIC Interview 3/17 with Lana Parrilla and Rebecca Mader on their Sister War (Read more in the thread)
TVF: Does Zelena have any regret about anything she’s doing at any time, or does that not even come into play because she knows what she wants and that’s what she’s getting?
RM: Well, there’s so many different phases of my life being shown. There are definitely past regrets, but it’s mostly coming from a place of hurt as opposed to regrets and mistakes that I’ve made personally. It’s more like other people have made mistakes and that has caused me pain.
TVF: There are a lot of nice looking guys on the show. Does Zelena have her eyes set on any of them?
RM: Yeah, but I can’t say. She definitely has a heart and has feelings, and that’s what’s interesting and you will get to see that. That she isn’t just dead inside and got a black-green heart, you know what I mean? She definitely has feelings and I think at this point, in the present day, they’re pretty much probably shut off because she’s in so much pain, but you do see in the past that she has feelings for somebody else.

Zelena mentioned that she was given up by Cora got me thinking so I went back to the and realized that Rose McIver is back as Tink in It’s Not Easy Being Green. Anyone else think that Tink loses her first gold star for meddling in Cora’s other daughter’s life?

Oh hey good observation.
Fairies used to take children right? They would take children that were sad and lonely and needed a home? Well, Tink could think that was the case with Zelena and take her to Oz.
