Emma accused Hook of lying about his “adventures” of the missing year. He said he was sticking with the story he told. Yet, we could tell last week in 1×13 that he’d changed his story, and Emma’s brow furrowed like her lie-detecting radar had gone off. What exactly is Hook hiding? Does it involve knowledge about Neal’s whereabouts? So what exactly was Hook doing during the missing year? How did he manage to escape this new curse and get to New York City? What is he lying about?

I think Neal sent Hook the message and told him to go get Emma but not to tell her. If she knew Neal was in trouble she’d go after him (see: Neverland arc). So Hook is keeping secrets about Neal, who is working as a double agent for Zelena

Agreed. If Zelena has some measure of control over Neal, was perhaps keeping him prisoner, (in both FTL and in SB, maybe he was being kept in the house and managed to get out and then went to bust Rumple out too), then he’d know about her Curse plans, but may have still had enough freedom to have been able to get the message to Hook via bird. He may even have had access to the stuff to make the memory potion if he could get into Zelena’s stash. If so, then I could see Neal adding a “PS. Don’t know if/when I’ll be able to get free, so don’t tell Emma what’s up with me when you see her.”
My way out there crack theory is that Hook took a page from the little mermaid. He got the ingredients but needed ursula to make the potion and help him to this land, but like the original mermaid, he needs the object of his affection to tell him that she loves him. Otherwise hook becomes one of Ursula’s lost soul. This is why he and Ariel are hanging out.

And agreed, there is a touch of desperation whenever he is courting Emma. Are we sure that he still has or owns his heart? He said, he got the memory-back-potion with the message – did he? It adds a layer to Hook, which is nice, because being just the guy who is lovesick and following Emma like a puppy would be a rather boring.
Guess that we will learn more when Blackbeard comes into play

My way out there crack theory is that Hook took a page from the little mermaid. I consider nothing to be a way out crack theory anymore. Emma dated a monkey, after all.
It’s an interesting idea and I do like the twist on the TLM.
