The remaining episodes, as they do for every story line and every character, tell us more and fill in more blanks. This is what A and E do for every character. Hook is not the exception.

I’m not denying that. I’m just saying that we cannot say for certain what he was doing or what he was not doing because it hasn’t been shown. Things are only obvious from certain perspectives. Someone could claim that Hook was lying on a beach drinking rum and it would be a legit theory because until shown other wise, all theories are legit.

An adventure that has yet to be defined, has it not? Every character on this show has unknown histories, personal denials, hidden demons plaguing their last year. All are being exposed as we go.

I agree, but again you’re making an declarative statement about what it “obviously” is. IMO nothing is obvious right now except that Hook is lying, probably for very good reasons, but reasons that have not yet been fleshed out on screen–only in headcanon. My problem isn’t so much your thesis but your language–as if it has been shown and is absolute.

I think it’s very possible Hook spent a year trying to get back, and I think it’s very possible he did not. But nothing is certain and/or obvious.
