I just really makes me angry that he’s died so many times. Come ON. I get it if they were setting up for something larger like that. It’s like every time he dies the walls come down a little bit. Like it’s what she needs to snap out of the rut. *frustrated with Emma*
Yes, it would actually be fitting if that’s the endgame they’re working towards, where little by little, Emma comes to realise as each loss of him affects her, just how much she wants and needs to have the courage to be with him.
She lost him back in the day, she didn’t know if he was dead or alive, but deep down she never stopped loving him.
Then she got him back in truly bizarre circumstances, and everything was totally awkward.
Then she lost him again over the portal, and that was enough to get her to confess that she loves and needs him.
Then she got him back again in NL, and had now progressed to just wishing the emotional turmoil would stop because she loves him but it’s too hard losing him and it’d be easier without him around.
Then she lost him again, but she didn’t remember 5 seconds after it happened.
Then she got him back again, only to have him die within, like, an hour or so of them reuniting, and this time she was grief stricken, purely because she loves him, and their son, and wanted them all to remain together.
Emma has had a little bit of progress each time one of these separations and coming back together have happened, (and seriously, constantly tearing a couple apart is the CLASSIC way to deal with an endgame couple, it’s fricking TV show writing 101). If they did end up together in the end, their story will have actually built up in a believable way, and it would eventually be a beautiful thing and the strength of their bond would make them inseparable.
So if that’s what A&E mean when they say in interviews that his death was, like, the best thing ever for his character, then great. If they’re just trolling the fandom in the most epic way with all their comments about the death right now, then I’d be pissed to have been put through it, but at least it will have been worth it. It would actually be a fabulous act of troll-dom if they released the spoiler so early because they knew this was happening to Neal early on, and they wanted to lull the rest of the fandom into a false sense of security, and then come the finale BAM, nope, Neal’s not the permanent death, someone else is. It would be cruel, but it would be effective, and we did all think it very odd that they officially released such a massive spoiler when they did, considering they’re usually all about NO spoilers.
