When Hook was teaching Henry how to cheat, that’s when I knew there’s no future for CS.
There’s a much bigger picture happening here, and I think we’re just going to have to wait to see how they conclude all this.
It’s more about Henry than Emma, and Henry deserves better.
Agreed. Everything they’re doing with Hook right now is painting him in a worse and worse light as a suitable suitor. He’s teaching Henry to cheat so you always win, Emma’s opinion of him is changing based on something good he let her believe about a situation, when the truth about the situation is that he chose to kill a man instead of doing the right thing that Emma thinks he did.
And don’t get me wrong, I LIKED that they had Hook kill Blackbeard because PIRATE so it felt in character, which Hook hasn’t felt to me in ages. But would they seriously be writing him this way if they’re intending to make him the TL of the freaking Saviour?
A mere year ago, Hook had the option of letting a man live, and losing his ship as a result, but he’d help Ariel find Eric because Blackbeard would tell where he was. The choice Hook made, he made Blackbeard walk the plank, sliced him to make him bleed to attract the sharks, then shoved him into the water and there was a feeding frenzy as Blackbeard was eaten alive. All while Ariel stood there all, “WTF man, you said you’d help me find Eric?!”
Like I said, I’m OK with that because PIRATE, and pirates defend their ships 1000% because there’s a special relationship there, and the JR was the only love that Hook felt he had left (Sidenote: the REAL ship that came out of this ep a winner was Flook, because he displayed intimate knowledge of where the loose floorboard was on the deck and he was proud of knowing those floorboards so well. #OTP). So I have no issue with Hook having killed Blackbeard, or choosing his ship over some mermaid he’d just met, or even lying to accept credit for the Eriel reunion. That lie fit in perfectly with the earlier scene where he taught Henry to cheat to always win. He held back the truth, and won a little more of Emma’s favour.
The only problem I have with it is people (including the writers if they make this relationship happen) thinking that this portrayal of Hook makes him an acceptable romantic partner for the freaking born of pure TL Saviour, and an acceptable father figure for her son. Because, just, NO. And I’d like to think that the writers, for all their faults, aren’t that oblivious to how they’re portraying Hook as being a bad example, and they’re deliberately writing him that way because in the end nothing will come of it.
They showed him selfishly choosing the love of his ship (JR) over being a better man and selflessly helping to save Eric and reunite him with his lost love. Frankly, it feels a bit like a setup where he’ll again be faced with the option of choosing the love of his ship (CS) over doing something selfless to save another man’s life and reunite him with his lost love. And because we’ve seen the situation with him, Ariel and Eric and how he made the wrong choice, it would be a much needed, believable and powerful redemptive moment when he makes the RIGHT choice in a similar situation with Emma and Neal.
That’s how the story progression would make sense to me, anyway. Whether or not the writers have that level of competence right now, I’m still flipping a coin on that one.
