I was musing over what destiny might hold on a show like Once.
Remember what Neal said in Manhattan:
Neal Cassady: [to Emma] You know, there’s not a ton about my father that I remember that doesn’t suck. But he used to tell me that there are no coincidences. Everything that happens, happens by design, and there’s nothing we can do about it; forces greater than us conspire to make it happen. Fate, destiny, whatever you wanna called it, the point is… maybe we met for a reason. Maybe something good came from us being together.
Neal and his father both seemed to have a quite a fatalistic outlook on destiny. They seemed to think that one’s destiny cannot be altered no matter what you try and do about it. That could be why Neal accepted his own death so easily and why Rumple seemed frozen and unable to help his son.
Nevertheless, I can’t get Doc’s voice out of my head. He took an optimistic perspective by the final film. He said:
“Marty, the future isn’t written. It can be changed, you know that. Anyone can make their future whatever they want it to be. I can’t let this one little photograph determine my entire destiny. I have to live my life according to what I believe is right in my heart.”
— Doc (Back to the Future III)
Now we have Glinda telling Zelena that your destiny is whatever you choose it to be. I wonder what Emma will decide is her destiny.
