So we talk a lot in various threads about the divisions between the fandom, most of which stem from the various ships. What I’ve noticed is that various threads have excellent thoughts and conversations about particular characters, but because they’re posted in various shipper threads for lack of another space or fear/belief that people outside that ship can’t relate, other members can’t appreciate them because they simply don’t go in that thread.
I’ll use my own example – misconception: All CSers hate Neal and are glad he’s dead.
So incredibly not true. I really like the character of Neal and in the entirety of the 3 seasons the one thing I really take issue with is his death. And I’m far from the only CSer who feels this way. But I AM a loud and proud CSer. So…I want to talk about Neal, but…do I go to the SF thread? Pro-Neal CSers are not going to bombard the SF thread….to a thread for a ship that’s not yours, where you’re bound to encounter lots of stuff you don’t want to see – which is completely acceptable and appropriate – it’s that ship’s haven. Besides, the things I want to do have very little to do with SF, they have to do, specifically, with Neal. And some of us don’t ship at all — I can only imagine it’s annoying to have to go to a shipper thread to discuss a topic about the characters and have to sift through gifs and swooning galore to find some rational conversation. Just today I found some excellent posts in the SF thread I’d love to comment on, but I’m simply not going to in the SF thread because it’s not the appropriate place AND I’m still only getting one faction of the fandom’s thoughts and opinions, when I want SFers, non-SFers and non-shippers’ opinions on the topic, too.
So…anyone’s thoughts about how we can repair the rift? Here at least? Besides the occasional chat conversation? I still think we’re one of the more moderate and open minded OUAT forums out there but the fandom is still so caught up in hate and preconceptions and misconceptions, etc etc. Can you imagine if we could come together and have some really great character analyses and discussions during the hiatus — it could possibly even make S4 more fun to watch instead of constantly thinking “I know what so-and-so’s ship is going to say” and getting people fired up because they still look at a fandom and have serious – let’s face it – prejudices.

That is a good idea I have seen this on another forum and it seemed to work there. The only down fall is that is kind of like the old forum would be good for this one postings are all over the place. 🙁
We have character threads for almost every single character including Hook, Neal, Snow, Emma, Rumple, Charming, ect. They don’t get used a lot anymore, but they used to be quite prolific in S1 before shipping took over.

This would be difficult. Possible. But difficult. Ships are heavily involved with how we see some characters and even when they aren’t, others THINK they are. An example would be a post I made a few weeks ago. I’m a Swanfire shipper and I loved the character of Hook. But I didn’t like how he was being portrayed in season 3B. So I made a post in the Hook discussion thread and it was like I bombed a plane. One comment being I opened up a can of worms, when I was just like hey how do you guys feel about where this character is going. I even made a note at the beginning saying it had NOTHING to do with ships, just the character. Anyway, what I mean to say is, if we can all politely discuss the characters understanding that we all percieve things differently, ship involved or not, I think we could repair the rift and be a happy OUAT fam again. Even as a SwanFire, I read the CS thread. I disagree with a lot that is said there but also see things from a different perspective. I never comment, but there it is. I just think its improbable we could all have a polite discussion. Look at what happened in the SF thread a few days ago when a wild CS appeared. Its possible. Just improbable. Lord knows id like to see all our perspectives but I don’t want this to become a tumblr xD

Not that hard.
Why does it stay in shipping threads? Easy. It won’t stay polite in other places. We’ve crossed that bridge, that ship has sailed, and whatever other tired metaphors you can think of. People try to give their opinions about a character and they are shut down and vilified in other places. I wish it weren’t so.

HELPUFL FORUM LINKS” is now stuck to the front page of the site and has all the character discussion, shipping, and some misc threads. That should help
